ok bear with me, i have no shift function and a long question.
i need to make a dq themed cake. thats not bad. she wants a cone laid on top with icing to look like a chocolate ice cream cone, but shes very particular that the ice cream has the trademark shape of a dq cone - if you look at anything dq you'll probably see it. not swirled, but large 'poof', taper, smaller 'poof' then curl on top. any tips or suggestions for doing this smoothly. i've always done, and seen, swirled ice cream effects but that wont cut it this time.
she also wants little dq signs - the 'eye' they call it, red with white dq inside- on the corners. ideas/ fondant is what i was thinking, which i've never used.
last question. she asked if i could keep the paper wrapper on the cone. i thought it might absorb moisture. any insight/
thanks anyone who can help - this is for a graduation so i think i could have alot of potential customers, so i want to impress1

maybe you could form the 'ice cream' swirl part from chocolate clay or fondant? it may be easier than freehand piping. as far as the paper on the cone, i think it should be ok but you could always do an experiment to be sure. good luck!

Ok, I found a pic cuz I couldn't remember what their cones look like. Anyone who's not familiar, it's the 3rd pic on page in the link below:

I think you could use a round tip, large/largest you can find and pipe each layer onto cake to get that effect. Or as kkhigh mentioned, use fondant. Hope this helps.

I was thinking the same thing as sweetbaker. Fill the cone with buttercream icing using a really big tip. You could even just use a coupler. (One without a notch in it.) The icing might have to be on the stiffer side if you wanted it to hold the little curl though.
Would there be a way to take the paper wrapper off of the cone, laminate it with contact paper or something and then stick it back on the cone? Or just stick was paper around the back side of the cone where it touches the cake.

I don't know if you still need this idea for your Dairy Queen cake but I found something tonight that might work. If you take a large disposable decorating bag and cut the end as big as needed then just pipe without a coupler or any tip it pipes a nice big, rounded, even dome of icing.

I discovered this at work tonight ( an evil commerical bakery) so I don't have pic, But I hope you understand what I'm saying.

make the ice cream just like DQ does it. squeeze until it builds up then pull up to peak then form the next layer on top of that peak just the same as the one before it. you could make a fondant piece identical to the DQ paper for the cone
