What do most of you use for the Cake Board (Base). I have seen some really beautiful bases and was wondering what you use. Some of them almost look like some type of wood. What do you recommend and found that works the best. Thank you in advance for all your answers.

I gave up the card board today. I just bought a $9 plastic tray at Target today. Size 19"x 14" for a sheet cake. It has a pattern on it that I could cover if needed. I just get tired of covering too many card board. Still looking for a permant plastic box to carry it in.
I did just try earlier this year covering the card board with those plastic table cloths they sell in the party section. Very affordable and attractive looking.

I went to michaels and bought a large 1 inch piece of foam board that I cover with foil paper. It was only 3 dollars (apx) for a 3 foot by 18 inch board that is 1 inch thick. I cut the size I need, cover it, and if I get it back great. If I don't, not too much money to replace. I use the caardboard cake boards as well so the foil wrap doesn't get messy, I just ice the cake on the regular board, lay a small square of that foam no-skid mat on the foil covered foam, and put the cake on it. And the foam even holds up to a pretty heavy cake as well without cracking the BC.

DH is cutting some cake boards for me tomorrow. He is using masonite and I will charge a $10.00 refundable deposit for them. I here this usually brings them back in pretty fast.

I usually use the cardboard but i'm making a really big cake in june and bought a piece of board at lowe's, its not masonite but its the same thickness and its very sturdy. I plan to cover it with gift wrap to match the occasion & plastic but the plastic table cloth idea is great. Will use that if i cannot find giftwrap to match a christening. Thanks for that idea janethorp

wal-mart carries sterilite products and they have a 28qt plastic container. I can't remember the width, but it's GREAT thumbs_up.gif as a cake carrier and it's priced at $3.97. They also have a 41quart at $6.97. It looks like it could be smaller width not really sure. I also get the rubber shelf liners for 97cents and cut them to the size I need for the bottom of the plastic to prevent any moving around.

hope this helps

For sheet cakes I use plywood... I just have my dh cut pieces when I need it. It's cheap and holds up better than cardboard.
