Try toothpaste with a gritty consistancy. The abrasive nature of the toothpaste takes food coloring off hands. If you can't get it off the nails, acetone does the trick!

I too seem to have the same problem. Always start off with gloves on but give up and yes coloured hands and nails. Want to sit on them when I am in public. Thanks suzzmazza for your tip.

Thank you so much for the tip. I had no idea what to do and I have some wonderful patients to work with tomorrow!

Try lemon juice too, seems to work after eating Indian food. I used to think the half lemon was just a garnish till a waiter told me the real reason, what a dum dum I am. Also, since starting cakes I have had a terrible problem with the state of my nails too. Once strong and thick, they now split and chip and flake and I was wondering if it is because my hands are in water a million times a day? Anyone else have a hand problem? Gloves are out of the question for me I can't stand them.

I heard that Comet scrub is really good at taking the coloring off your hands and nails. I haven't tried it yet though.

I use the good old nail brush for washing finger tips and under the nails--and if the stuff is bad I use foot scrub since it is really gritty. I garden so dirt is an issue! I usually stay color free decorating cakes--except the time I delivered a cake and had green all over my thumb. Lets say I couldn't blame it on gardening!

I haven't tried it for food coloring, but when I was little, my mom always bought Lava soap, because my brothers & I would get so dirty. It has pumice.

If it's really bad, I just paint 'em until the color wears off. icon_wink.gif LizzyB, you're dead on that water (and probably soap) are affecting your nails. I'd just keep a coat of strengthener on all the time (you're usually supposed to layer it every night anyway). Drugstore brands are fine - work just as well as the expensive stuff.

The quickest way I remove the colors from my hands and under my nails is with Crisco....seems to cut it quickly and it doesn't dry out my skin.
