I'm using a 1/2 cup butter 1/2 cup crisco, 4 cups powdered sugar + flavoring recipe, and even though i thin it out with corn syrup, it still seems SO THICK and its HARD to spread smoothly. Any tips? It seems to stick like a big BLOB to the cake and it is IMPOSSIBLE not to tear the cake up or pull a million crumbs. ![]()

Let's see...
1/2 cup of butter
1/2 cup of Crisco
4 cups of powdered sugar
flavorings
corn syrup
How about adding water instead of corn syrup?
I use water all the time. With milk, it also gets quite thick so you have to add more.
for the above recipe, start with 4 tablespoons of water and mix. Check out the consistency and then keep adding water 1 teaspoon at a time until thin enough to spread.
2 tablespoons of water - thick consistency icing
4 tablespoons of water - medium consistency
6 tablespoons of water - thin icing (this is the one you should use to coat the cake)
Hope this helps.
Sorry had to edit amounts of water. I always double this recipe.
