I am flying to Illinois next month to make a graduation cake for my nephew who has just graduated from high school and is having a party. Of course I am flat out of ideas for a great design to celebrate this event. Can anyone suggest some things to make this a memorable one for him before he goes off to college? He is going to major in history to be a teacher but he is going to minor in culinary arts also to help him as this teacher says most history teachers need to be PE teachers also or have a back up plan. Thanks everyone!!!

This caught my eye since I am a history teacher turned cake decorator! Try searching the galleries. They have one just for grad cakes.

You could do an open book with one side being a history page and the other side being his favorite recipe. Have fun

Cakegrama, This might sound weird, but what if you made the bust cake...(You know the one that they used for spiderman, etc.) with a mortar board and gown. I think that would be really cool. Of course, I could never pull a cake like that off, but I would love to see one done! Good luck with whatever you decide to do!

how about combining the two interests, like "the history of cooking"...im thinking an open book and stick figures portraying the progression....kind of humorous and doesn't require alot of artistic talent (which is a plus in my book!) ..start them out eating a big ole "raw" turkey leg or something, then cooking over a campfire, then a man with a bbq grill, then in the kitchen with a chef hat...

just going with the flow here...i'm a bit addled though so take it as you will! icon_biggrin.gif

startaylor, I think that's a cute idea!

Cakegrandma, gosh there are so many amusing ways to combine the two. I can understand being stumped though. What a nice thing you're doing for him.

how about including congratulations too, sort of a past present future look at his life. The book idea is great because you can do a few books, or two, so one book of teaching, another, recipe for success, (open book with recipe for success written out), and a rolled up diploma. Well I cant put a rein around that- you know your nephew better so can picture what would work. Good luck! My eldest nephew graduates from university this month! ACK It seems like yesterday he was in diapers icon_sad.gif(

Thanks everyone for the ideas, I have a lot to choose from and can combine different parts together. Yes, it does seem like just yesterday he was just in diapers, of course that does not make me any older, just him :0). Thanks again
