I have never had problems with my cakes bulging until recently; what is up with that?! I have racked my brain and can't think of anything that I'm doing differently. I've read the articles on CC about it, and am still having problems. Today was the "last straw"...I did a cake for my husband's 30th bday, and the sides were chocolate transfer sheets. I let my cakes settle and smoothed back out the bulges, and then put the transfer sheets on. I finished the cake this afternoon, and I just looked at it and noticed that the chocolate has puckered and you can see where icing bulges are between the layers. ARGH!!!!! icon_mad.gif It's too late for this cake (thank goodness it's not a paying cake) but can anyone give my some advice for future cakes?

Are you using the same recipe/mix you always use? maybe you need to put a dam aroung the cake and let it crust a bit and then fill. there is way where you make a well in the bottom layer and then put your filling in. This way you never get a bulge. How did you put your transfer sheet on the cake? Did you make a choc. band first and wrap that around your cake and then put the transfer on?

When I have this problem it is when I have rushed to frost as soo as the cake is cool instead of waiting a few hours

or it is a filled cake and I used too much filling ..

or the buttercream is too thick for its density. too much and too soft.
