Hi everyone. i am new to this site but I absolutly LOVE it...very addicting and everyone seems so helpful and nice. Anyhow, I am new to decorating and have only done a few cakes but have been happy with the ones I have completed. I would like to make a tornado cake and would like to know if anyone has any ideas for me on how I might go about making it. I have done a few 3d cakes and love them. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Not sure how you would get the shape of a tornado - maybe you could try the terracotta pot thing like they use to do some of the popcorn buckets etc. to give you a basic shape. Swirl the icing up the sides? I think it would be really cool if you could have things sticking out of it.... like a cow, tractor etc.

if doesn't need it to be standing up...

(which would be the same as doing an upside down tier cake --- think the wilton tall tier stand set up backwards w/ smallest plate on bottom and rising to largest plate on top -- a real balancing act)

would do one laying down (on the job) by taking many tiers of gradually decreasing (or increasing depending upon your POV) and stack them horizontally...offsetting them to left and right to get the classic zig-zag tornado shape.

2 smallest tiers could be a cupcake cut in half with one half carved to get the point.

could shape all the tiers by carving or (for the sugar-rush/shock fans) slathering on extra icing (my vote! icon_rolleyes.gif).

as tiers increase in size, use more and more of the tier with last tier having only a bit trimmed off to make it have a flat side to stand on.

run skewers or dowels horizontally through tiers to hold together.

consider using melted chocolate for "glue" between tiers (adds crunch and taste as well) -- tho if well iced and doweled probably not necessary (but then -- can you ever have "enough" chocolate -- which of course would be the flavor of the cake if I made it -- after all adds to the "dirty" look most tornadoes have)

then, as Juds2323 said -- add little things sticking out --
the cowfriends bossy and bessy
a certain house w/ a certain rainbow leaping girl and her little dog too
of course that girl's nemesis flying by on a broom
etc.
