HI

I was just on the Kopykake website and it says that we can use our printer just change the ink to edible ink and edible paper? Is this a good idea? or should I just look at a whole seperate printer? What do you all think?

Well, I went with a whole new printer, and dedicated it solely to Edible images. Somehow it didn't seem sanitary to switch an already used printer over. (That is just my opinion, It may be perfectly fine)

I asked something about edible images earlier this week and I believe someone told me that the printer could not have already been used with regular ink. I've never tried it so I don't know but I don't know how safe it would be to eat regular ink.

If your printer has been used with standard inks, you should start with a new printer for edible imaging. This is from the Canon site...

Standard inks (either Canon manufactured inks or other third party inks) are not safe to digest and immediate medical advice should be sought if this were to happen.

If the use of edible inks and/or edible icing paper were contemplated then extreme caution should be taken to avoid cross contamination with any standard inks. If standard ink has ever been used in a printer, internal components of that printer will contain standard ink. As such anything edible passing through the printer should not come into contact with such components. Canon accepts no liability or responsibility for health concerns caused by the use of edible ink.

I have a cannon 3000 and it is just for the images...It is best to have a seperate one..then there is no chance of getting any ink on you image. Bumps

Kopykake is apparently concerned about the current scarcity of compatible printers and want to ensure a steady cash flow.

This isn't the only bit of bad information Kopykake has put out. They skeer me just a little!

Thanks!! I thought it wasn't a very good idea myself since my printer has been sitting around for awhile getting dusty (I do clean it but not the inside!) Was just wondering whay you all thought! Good to know we are all on the same page!

Which printer does everyone recommend? because I'm in Canada, it's harder to find but am wondering where everyone buys theirs in the States?

I got both my Canon ip1500s from Amazon. The last few times I've checked eBay there were a few there, too. Someone I know got the 3000 by cruising all the office supply stores. She found one on a clearance table - dirt cheap.

IMO, the Canon iP3000 is the best. The iP1500 is also good. The best place to find one new is eBay. The cost will be between $50 and $100 If you're not in a hurry, you can wait till KK comes out with the cartridges for the newer Canon models.

No it's not a good deal. It's priced well over retail and the included Canon printer is not one you'll want to use for edible imaging because of the high cost of operating/maintaining it. I've never seen a kit deal that was a "good deal". It's better to buy the printer and the supplies separately.

Thank you very much lisa!

I'm sorry to be such a pain but could you please guide me to a website that sells the canon's and the rest of the supplies? I'm having no luck finding it!

You're welcome icon_smile.gif

I buy my supplies from www.kopykake.com and if I were to buy a printer, I'd purchase the Canon iP3000 new off eBay. Search www.ebay.com and/or www.ebay.ca for new Canon iP3000 printer.

I just did an eBay check, and there are lots of ip3000 and ip1500 printers available today. Several for reasonable "buy it now" prices. They're kind of hard to find because you have to wade through all the listings for ink. Just use advanced search and ask it to filter out "ink" and "cartridge" and you'll find them easier.

That package deal listed above is unreal! Those people won't be in business too long. I went to their website, and they are asking $10 for a SINGLE sheet! $70 for 10. I don't think soooooo.... Sounds like they're selling (or..trying to sell) glorified wafer paper. Amazing.

I was just looking on e-bay at the Canon ip3000 printers and some of the "buy it now" printers are refurbished. Can you use these ones for edible images?

The refurbished printers have most likely been used/tested with standard inks. You'll want to use a new printer.

I just found a website called Icing Images and they sell the canon iP3000 and the high performance printer basic package is $389. You get the USB cable, 1 set of edible ink cartridges (4 cartridges), 1 set of cleaning cartridges (4 cartridges), and 1 pack of 25 - 8.5-11 icing sheets.
And the shipping to Canada is only $20.00!!!!!!!!!!! icon_eek.gificon_eek.gificon_eek.gif
I have checked on ebay and a lot of people won't ship to Canada and if they do they want to charge $42.00 or more! I am jealous of Americans because they have so much more opportunity for things like this! (Please don't take this in a bad way....some Canadians will only ship to the U.S. too! go figure? also because I wish I could go the the Wilton tent sale and take Wilton's master courses and go to the cake camp in Las Vegas! Cakes just aren't that big of a deal up here! icon_cry.gif ) Okay I'm done....sorry about that!!
Anyways, what do you all think, is it still a pretty high price?

Sounds way high to me! But, I do understand your frustration. I was thinking that maybe you could send money to someone on this side of the border and have them buy and ship it to you. But, there would probably be really high customs fees...???? I don't know about such things. Given the exchange rate, though...you might come out better. Things like this have got to drive you crazy!

I agree with Crimsicle...that is way high!

The retail cost of the supplies provided with the printer is $50 for the edible ink cartridges, $44 for the cleaning cartridges and $28 for the frosting sheets = $122 If you purchased that basic package, you'd be paying $267 for the Canon iP3000 printer.

The average BIN on ebay for this printer is $75. If you add on the cost of shipping to Canada at $42 = $117 That's a difference of $150 you'd be overpaying if you purchased that package/kit.

It's one that can be used for edible imaging. You can be happy again icon_biggrin.gif ! It's a 2 cartridge printer and you'll need the KJKCSET edible ink cartridges.

You'll find all the edible imaging supplies you'll need there for your printer. The site is difficult to navigate though and the info is hard to find. Might want to stop by www.kopykake.com for more info and to see pics of the items you're ordering. Sugarcraft sells Kopykake supplies so it's all the same stuff. I've ordered from both sites and been happy with both.

You're welcome. If you need help finding the supplies to go along with your printer...here are the links from the KK site. I can't get direct links to the individual products at Sugarcraft since they don't have individual pages but the same products are also located there.

Claudine - A lot of people hesitate to get the 1500 because it has only two cartridges. But, for my money, it's great. It enabled me to get started a little more economically. Check out my pictures. All of my edible images were made with the 1500. It may be small, but it's mighty! icon_smile.gif You'll love your printer.

The iP1500 is a great choice for people who don't plan to print a lot of edible images. I also use a 2 cartridge printer and I'm happy with it.

The reason I put the iP3000 (4 cartridge) ahead of the iP1500 (2 cartridge) is because the iP3000 is actually less expensive to operate over the long term. A 4 cartridge printer will have an individual cartridge for each color so when one color runs out, you can easily replace or refill only that color. A 2 cartridge printer will have one cartridge for all three colors (tricolor), when one color runs out you'll have to either refill or replace the entire cartridge. If you don't plan to refill, it can be costly to replace the entire cartridge when just one color runs out. Refilling can also be difficult with the tricolor cartridge.

If you don't print a lot of images, just a few a month, it's not that much of a concern though.
