I need to make a 3-D vacuum cleaner cake for my stepfather's birthday in 2 weeks. I'll post the picture of what I want it to look like, but I have no idea where to start or how I'm gonna do it, so I'm picking the brains of my CC friends icon_smile.gif
help?

I need to use buttercream icing on the majority of it, I will probably use a little fondant, but the main part of the cake has to be buttercream. Any more ideas?

Everybody that reads my replies is going to think, "Doesn't this woman ever come up with a different idea?" lol But everytime I think of making 3-D cakes, I think of putting a sheet or round cake under it. You could make your base cake (and then you have somewhere to write a message on it, as well) and then make the vacuum from a small square cake with a portion of it cut away to fit a small round cake (6 in. maybe). Then stack a couple more rounds and carve it a little to resemble the shape of the vacuum. Use a dowel rod through the cake for support and leave it long to use as the handle and either coat the dowel in buttercream or fondant. What do you think? Hope maybe there is a shred for you to use... icon_smile.gif

So what can I do the handle out of? It should be at a slight angle to look realistic....

Fondant mixed with Gumpaste? You could make the fondant mix just go slightly higher than the dowel and have it curve just a little. If it's not hanging over too much, I bet it'd dry that way...

sketch from another post about this:

and link to that post where it's explained

adapt shape and height of tiers

(in this case -- round tiers and much longer handle -- most of handle I'd make out of a dowel covered in fondant/gumpaste with that as hook on end too (as suggested above)

Gonna be a challenge for me icon_smile.gif Thanks for all the ideas guys. I hope the cake isn't too much cake! It's only feeding like 10 of us I think.
