i'm sorry i didn't know how to entitle this post. anyway, i live in frankfurt, germany. cake decorating is my hobby and i usually bring cakes to celebrations we're invited to so i can share my (sort of) new passion. (and secretly, i really like the wows too icon_redface.gif ) i think my cakes get raves here because they're different from what the people normally buy in the bakery. they look and taste different. i use american cookbook and online recipes and in general, that would mean it's sweeter than what people here are used to. what am i trying to say? well, most of the time i hear the "that looks great!" and "this tastes great!" and i'm happy of course. but every once in a while, someone will tell me that it is too sweet. my question is, what do i say to that? if there were no praises then i would get it that they didn't like it.

with that in mind, the other thing i wanna bring up is the fondant. so i use fondant for effect. of course people here always think it's marzipan till i explain what fondant is. then before people even take a bite, i tell them that they don't have to eat the fondant if they don't feel for anything too sweet just so they won't have to eat it so as not to offend me. what do you all think of that? am i being weird?

sorry if this post really doesn't seem to have a point but i dunno how to explain myself or how i feel. does anyone understand me?

Most people I run into aren't used to fondant, either, unless they watch the cake shows on TV. I always let them know that they don't have to eat the fondant. I don't like it, so I certainly can't expect anybody else to eat it. icon_smile.gif i don't think it's weird at all.

It's good to know that I'm not the only one who does that. I always tell people they don't have to eat it. Of course, with Satin Ice fondant and the "buttercream dream" icing I've found that lots of people do.

As far as the "it's too sweet", you could just tell them it's the American version. I used to work for a Japanese company and when we had a pitch in and my Japanese co-workers would bring in a dessert, they'd always tell me that I would like it because it wasn't as sweet as American desserts. I hadn't the heart to tell them we LIKE the sweet!! icon_wink.gif

(Those pitch-ins were great! I got to explore a lot of new foods that way!)

I always feel that I need to explain fondant too and let people know that it is fine not to eat it. Around here its not normal, everyone is used to Walmart cakes I guess. I am hoping to change that soon in my area icon_smile.gif
