I got caught staring again today. Poor ladies at the Walmart bakery. Everytime I go grocery shopping, I end up stopping and watching them frost and airbrush. They keep asking me if I need anything...nope...just watching. I think they think I am a voyer.

Sigh. I love cakes.

Yup, you have the disease!! icon_lol.gif
I can't walk past a bakery of any sort without checking out their cakes or their book of cake styles and pictures etc and now I also check the newsagent for their recipe books and cake mags!

Oh well! At least our obsession is something edible we can share with others!

And try to get other people to understand! People magazine ran a picture of Marcia Cross's (redhead on Desparate Housewives) cutting her wedding cake, a creation that towered over their heads. I turned the magz to my husband and said, "Would you look at that?"

He said, "Yeah.....she's hot!"

I said, "THE CAKE, YOU IDIOT! I WAS TALKING ABOUT THE CAKE!"

Will they never learn! There was a cake in the pic ....what ELSE would I be looking at? (big sigh!)

You are not alone! In our Walmart the deli counter and bakery are connected, so while I get luncheon meat, my eyes are glued to the cake decorator! I kind of have to stand on my tippy-toes and lean forward, too to get a good angle...I'm sure I look pretty silly to anyone other than a fellow cake decorator! =)

oh that's ok! we all recognize the look! When I did my nephew's wedding, my husband pointed out that a lady was really scrutinizing my cake. I looked over and saw how she was looking at it; told hubby "oh she makes 'em!" he asked if I knew her. I said, "No...I can't just tell by the way she's looking!"

Turns out it was a CC'er and we are related to the groom on different sides of the family!

My daughter and I stopped just the other day and watched the lady decorating a cake in the grocery store. My daughter was sos amazed that she decorated it in about five minutes. (just the cake) I actually knew the lady and expalined to my daughter that she has been doing it for 20 years. It was fascinating watching her icon_biggrin.gif

I go to three grocery stores a week, hitting the sale items. I stalk every bakery, then feel very satisfied to come home and know my flowers look better. icon_biggrin.gif

Last night we were watching Extreme Makeover Home Edition. My husband just shook his head when I said, "LOOK, they got a new CHROME Kitchen Aid!!!"

I am sick too. icon_redface.gif

Yes, I too watch people in amazement and wonder how they do that! I look like a snail working on a cake! After a couple of hours I get my kids (I'm so excited!) - "come look at my cake right now!! I'm done! Bet you didn't think it would ever look like anything, huh!" They look - 'that's great, mom' and walk away. They're wondering why I interupted thier exciting life.... icon_confused.gif

When my husband first started woodworking, he would call me out to the garage to see how great 2 joints fit together; to feel the smooth sanding job; to see the great finish he had put on a piece. Oh geesh! It's a piece of wood! Leave me alone ... my TV show is on!

So now, when I want him to look at a cake, I tell him he has to come and look at my great sanding job.

He knows what I mean! icon_twisted.gif

Years ago in Los Angeles's Farmers Market, there was a bakery called "Humphrey's" they had huge plate glass windows on the front and side of the shop and the decorators did the cakes right there where you could stand outside and watch. My family toured the market while I watched the decorators. Little did I know at the time that I would take a class from the head decorator years later, John McNamara. Very talented man, he did mainly figure piping of fun things like Pink Elephants in champagne glasses, icing poodles, etc.

LOL that's just too funny icon_lol.gif The one grocery store I go to, the staff is always so friendly and well when you walk up to a bakery counter or a deli counter, it's sort of their job to ask what they can do for you, but it's a bit annoying when all you want to do is ogle lol.

It certainly makes you have an open mind when you encounter someone in another field/passion who gets excited over those little things (like sanding or fitting 2 joints together) and that and cake deco are totally unrelated but you understand the child-like excitement over little things. My 7 yr old nephew is like that when he builds things out of Lego. He is addicted to Lego, and it's so sweet to see him get excited about those little things thumbs_up.gif

They are laughing because they think you are on a diet and you are drooling over the cakes. icon_lol.gif
