I have been looking in the food gallery and noticed all the cool cakes done with a wine bottle made of cake. I was hoping someone out there can help me achieve this with some instructions. I'm throwing a wine/cheese party and think a cake in the shape of a wine bottle would be cool.

Also, how do you get those fancy looking labels to attach to the bottles?

Thanks,
dtmc

I haven't made one, but am thinking about doing it for my mom in a couple of months. If you're doing a stand up bottle, depending on how wide you want the bottle to be, I'd use a couple of 6" or 4" round cakes, stacked and then doweled. For the neck, either cut styrofoam into the shape you want or shape some aluminum foil into the shape you want, stick a dowel in it and put it onto the cake. Then just decorate the cake as usual. Some of the labels I have seen are either images printed onto rice paper or icing sheets or they are fondant and have been painted on.

If you're looking to do one laying down, there was a thread on that recently. I'll try to find it. Doug had posted an excellent drawing on how to achieve it laying down. I believe they said to use 6" rounds, cut in half, then stood them up side by side. I'll see if I can find that for ya.

HTH!

Here's that link - it's for a Tabasco bottle, but same concept.

I actually have a 3d bottle cake in a book at home. It's actually done from a 10inch square cake, that is further cut into 4 squares, then each square is cut into a circle, stacked, and the top square is carved into shape. The whole bottle is edible. It looks fantastic too.
If you're interested i will scan the pictures for you.
cheers

This website shows you how to construct a standing bottle out of cake.
