I made 4 batches of MMF today, split 3 of em up and colored. EVERY color came out perfect EXCEPT the brown and black. The first batch of brown got so crumbly (even with shortening) I had to throw it away. The batch of black got a weird texture, like it was breaking, but it was still sticky.. icon_eek.gif . Now, I used almost ALL Wilton colors except in the red, which was Americolor Super Red, I used some Americolor Super Black in the black, and added some of the Wilton black just to use it up, then it turned to crap. icon_mad.gif . The brown was all Wilton. Is there something in those Wilton colors that MMF doesn't like?????

I made some MMF and used the wilton colors and I din't have this problem. Could the colors have been old. I used brown in my spidey cake and it was fine. I can't think of anyreason why it would come out weird, did you try adding sugar when it got sticky and kneading it some more? Again I don't know.

Back when I used to make fondant I aways used the wilton colors. I did have problems trying to make very dark shades. It did get a little crumbly. if you add too much crisco that will mess it up too. I'd just pop it in the microwave for a few seconds and it worked better.

All the Wilton colors I just bought so they shouldn't be old. Maybe I just didn't add the right marshmallow/PS ratio...

I add the colors in the beginning stages, after I've melted the marshmallows. It's so much easier to me to start out with color than to knead it in. I make small batches at a time, so it works for me.

This just happened to me but I think that I had added too much of the color so it got a little crumbly. I added more powdered sugar and it was just fine.

I know this might sound like a stupid question but what is MMF? I'm new to decorating cakes and I've seen people talking about it, but never knew what it meant.

The Wilton colors will blend but, you have to knead it alot. I had to add more shortening and keep kneading it.

If possible, add the color to the melted marshmallows before you add the sugar. I see that you needed to split the batches and color them so that wasn't an option. The only thing I can think of is to add water to the crumbly mmf a little at a time. I have never had this happen to me and I use the black and brown wilton colors all the time. By the way, your cakes look great.
