I am wondering what everyone uses to cover their cake boards?? Do you buy the fancy foil wrap, use foil paper, etc. Looking for some new ideas.............

Hi Lippy,
I use foil or contact paper. This must be the most boring job of all of cake decorating, I always leave it for the last minute and hate, hate, hate this part!

Hi!

Usually the fancy foil wrap they sell at the cake supplies store. It's the same paper that florists use in wrapping their pots, if that helps.

Sometimes tinted parchment...

I love contact paper! It's much stronger than the foil. I recently started using wrapping paper covered in clear contact paper and I love how it looks!! Then I attach a ribbon around the edge. It can be a bit time consuming to first get the wrapping paper and then cover the board with both, but it looks great when you are finished.

I like the cake foil from the cake shop - and I've found my glue gun to be indispensible when putting it on the board!!!

I usually use contact paper. I sometimes use the kind that looks like marble. I recently started buying wrapping paper and clear as well.

I need to get a glue gun...... Need to remember to do that next time I'm at target or something.

I use foils or even wrapping paper to match the theme and put clear contact paper over it to protect it from leaching into the cake. LOVE how it looks. If it's just a basic cake and not for a party, foil works just fine......

Courtney, how do you keep the contact paper from bunching?

I used to just buy the lacy-looking boards, then I graduated to foil-covered boards.

Now, I use gift-wrapping paper, covered with clear Contact. I like having a variety of colors to work with.

For very important work, I still buy foil-covered cake drums and use them for the elegance factor.

kimmykate,

To keep it from bunching I carefully line it up and then gently attach it to one spot and then hold the contact up while I smooth it on with my hand.

For a really big board I only peel part of it off, stick on the edge and then slowly peel it off while smoothing it on. This works pretty well for big boards. Sometimes it's not big enough to cover the board and I have to put another piece of contact on, which can be tricky to line up perfectly.

Good luck,
Courtney
