I am going to start my first class (Beg 1 Decorating) on Tues. I am a little nervous.
I love this site and am so impressed with all of the cakes. I hope I can do well on my first cake, it seems a little hard. I am going to have fun and see what happens. Do you have any suggestions?
Thanks
Michelle
No suggestions except for what you already said "just have fun and see what happens!"
I feel the same way! I start Wilton Level 1 a week from Tuesday. A bit nervous too but mostly superbly stoked!
Have fun - look forward to seeing the first cake!
My biggest suggestion, (I'm a Wilton instructor) is to not talk yourself down!! If he/she shows you something and you are not able to immediately recreate it to perfection, don't get frustrated and say things like, "I suck", or "I can't do this". Remember that chances are good the person who is teaching you has been doing this for years! And it's going to take you some time to be really pleased with your work!! Good luck, have a great time, and TAKE PIX!!! We want to see them!!!
Ohh definately post a pic!! And GL at your classes, I really would love to take them too=) Jen
Oh thank you for all of the wonderful words. I just wrote down all tips ad goodies I need for the class and can't wait. I will post my pics. We are doing 4 cakes. I actually am taking my class at Pila's Pantry. All the classes at Michaels (Wilton classes) are taken. For the class I am taking they only want a non frosted cake brought and we do all the decorating there. The class is 2 hours so it should be fun.
Thanks again ![]()
hey cshelz, i saw your post, and when you said pila's pantry, i thought, wait a minute, i know where that is! just saying hi to a fellow corona neighbor
let me know how the class goes, i've taken two wilton courses at michaels, but wanted to try the pila's classes as well!
My very first cake in Wilton I practiced the Melvira method and it came out great! It was a great early on morale boost. My classmates and teacher were so impressed. Everyone said how did you do that. Tee hee... you rock Melvira! I did a crumb coat first...let it dry and then put on another coat and just when it's not tacky light roll it. I got the larger and smaller roller. Check out the article on it here.... You will be so glad you did. Icing consistency, crumbs and smoothing were the first frustrating things.... Enjoy!!!!
BTW...I posted that naked cake with just the Melvira BC icing....
I have done many things in my life from driving an 18 wheeler to managing a grocery store and believe it or not cake decorating is the most fun work i have ever done (if you even want to call it work). Keep the excitement and have a ball at your class hope to see some cakes from you soon.
I took class I in February and am starting the Fondant and Gum Paste next Monday. Just have fun and don't give up. "It's only cake."
I never finished a cake in class until the grand finale cake for lesson II. I always had to take them home to do the borders/finish. My teacher said that it was not important that I didn't finish in class but that I finished it at home and did not give up on it.
Also take pictures of your cakes. You will really be amazed at how you improve so quickly. Don't use the flash when you take the pictures. And put them on a dark beackground.
