Hi all,

I'm a fan of the homestarrunner.com cartoon website. I just got a wonder mold pan, and thought I'd make the "King of Town" character. For those who aren't familiar, here's a link showing some front and semi-side views: http://www.hrwiki.org/index.php/The_King_of_Town_Evolution

I'd like to try a 3-D cake, so I'm going to use the wonder mold pan for his body, and a fondant/gumpaste mixture for the crown, but I'm not sure how to do the head to get the beard right. Use a ball pan and cover in fondant? But how do I get the loopy beard effect?

Any ideas/help/tips/advice? I'm kinda lost on how to do this part.

for body...2 or 3 rounds stacked toped off w/ 1/2 of ball pan, not wonder mold (note how rounded his sholders are. carve away small ledge for head to sit on.

drape in red fondant robe, w/ white fondant trim

for head, mini-wonder mold. set it slightly forward on body, not directly on top...note how he seems stooped sholdered (hunched forward) dowel in place to make sure it stays.

drape in white fondant and use dowel to make dents in bottom for edge of beard.

trace the loops onto the bottom edge either by piping gray BC on or making a thin rope of gray fondant. (BC would be easier to get the loops)

add fondant mustach. Black BC eyes (or fondant) and top off w/ crown.

Thanks so much, Doug! I really appreciate it.

Hadn't thought of off centering his head - mostly because I wasn't sure how to do it, and because (contrary to the pics) a small figurine that my husband has of him has his head on the top of his body (yes, there really are action figures for these guys icon_smile.gif ).

I wasn't sure if fondant would work, since I didn't know how to do the bottom beard edge. But from your description, sounds like it'd work.

Thanks again!

Will do, Katydidz. icon_smile.gif

The King of Town cake is something I'll do when I have time. As it is, I need to make a practice "The Cheat" cake for a birthday party that's coming up, and maybe some BCT Strong Bad cookies if I can get them to come out ok.

I do have a Strong Bad cake pic in my photos, though, if you're interested. icon_biggrin.gif
