I was wondering if anyone had one or had ideas about making a dulce de leche buttercream? I assume it can be done by those coffee flavoring syrups but I was wondering if it can be done via the stuff in the can or homemade?

Sounds Delicioso!

You could buy dulce de leche from the ethnic isle in the grocery store. I like those better. Add to taste to the buttercream.
I always make almost everything from scratch but putting a can in the oven or stove i just cannot do it. Maybe when i buy a pressure cooker.....

Thanks ashianadotkom!

I have seen the cans pop up in the stores now, more commonly available. Homemade, you can boil it in a pot of water for 2 to 4 hours or take out of the can and let simmer in a double boiler, a bit safer than heating a can I would think, lol.

I will have to experiment on using it in a buttercream. Since it is already sweet, adding more powdered sugar to it could be a problem, which is why I was hoping for a recipe just to see how they got around this. I have seen some use egg yolks with a bit a flour and make sort of a custard/curd, very interesting. I thought maybe the same could be done to form a sort of Italian meringue dulce de leche buttercream. To the lab, errr kitchen, I go...lol.

Last time I was in a Walmart supercenter, I noticed they sold the canned Dulce de Leche. I have never used it in buttercream, but have added to cheesecake with GREAT results.

try making a meringue buttercream - it's less sweet and may be a really nice base for adding the dulce de leche OR I was thinking about adding some caramel ice cream topping to either BC or meringue buttercream....please post with your results!!
