A saw a thread on mixing MMF with rolled buttercream so I decided to try it on my 3D baby cake. I used more MMF than RBC because I thought the RBC would be too soft and break. I was also worried that I wouldn't be able to cover a ball shape with fondant. It actually wasn't too hard to do. What seems to work for me is to roll it out quite a bit bigger than what I'm covering. I'm not crazy about how shiny it is though. I'm not sure what to do about that. The baby's face could be cuter too...

It is precious! I have never seen a 3D cake like that one before and would love to try it for a friend's shower. Would you mind telling us how you did it?

WOW! That looks absolutely fantastic!
I have to say I'm new working with MMF - Not that I'm a veteran working with anything yet icon_smile.gif) I've only worked with a RBC recipe I found at allrecipes.com a few months ago. Didnt seem to have any issues with it, at least I figured my cakes just look like crap due to inexperience icon_smile.gif) So lat night I was making a cash register and it kept tearing, so I removed it (and searched here in the forums for ideas, and someone mentioned the same thing, mixing MMF and RBC. So I happen to have a few marshmallows on hand so I improved and melted those, and mixed into my RBC and WOW it looked great, I could even flip and no tearing! I'm HOOKED NOW! icon_smile.gif) No more RBC for this woman! LOL

Hi , could you please post the exact recipe for the mmf and rbc combo? This baby looks so awesome, so real. How about posting all instructions on how to make it, I'm sure that everyone would more than appreciate it, I know, that I for one would treasure it. Wonderful work

Your baby looks terrific. As for the shine, I just attribute it to the syrup used in the RBC. Mine always turns out with that shine also.
I have wondered if you could maybe dust it witha little PS or cornstarch to take away the shine.

I'm not that good at giving instructions on my cakes but I can try. I usually just wing it and keep it all in my head. I did take a pic of the cake before I put on the fondant but I forgot to take pics before I iced it. I'll attach the pic.

I used the ball cake pan for the head. I cut off a little bit on the bottom and on the top of the ball. I made a nose shape out of fondant and used a toothpick to stick it onto the cake. I also made eye shapes, mouth and a chin peice out of fondant. I stuck the chin on with a toothpick too. Oh and I put a rolled peice under for the ear too. I wasn't completely happy with this method though. I think I would do it differently next time....like maybe try to sculpt the head from a square... I wanted the baby to have cute big cheeks like my baby girl but I didn't know how to do that with the ball shape. You can't use too much frosting on the face either b/c it gets weird icing bubbles when you try to form the fondant over the features. I painted the eyelashes with gel colors and used petal dust for the mouth and a little petal dust for the cheeks. There's a pink MMF bow on the baby's head.

For the shoulders/neck I used 1/2 a ball cake which I cut just a little off of the top and then off one of the sides where it laid on the board. Then for the body I used 2 7" cakes stacked, and on top of that I used another 1/2 ball cake. You may have to cut down the ball a little to get the right shape. I had to fill it in a little with other cake peices where the baby's back was. I put a couple little peices for the feet and hands. I don't think you can even see them though once I got the blanket on. I iced with buttercream filling in any gaps.

The blanket I just rolled out, used the wilton embosser to make a diamond pattern. Don't go too deep with this b/c it can make your fondant fall apart when you try to pick it up.( I learned this the hard way, LOL) Then I used a paring knife to press the fringes into the blanket edge. I only cut all the way through on some of them b/c this made it fall apart too. I carefully laid the blanket on the baby with hubby's help and then went around the cake and used scissors to cut the fringe where I wanted to and arranged it around the baby.

For the MMF/RBC recipe I used the MMF recipe from this site- 16 oz marshmallows, 2 T water and 2 lb powdered sugar

The RBC recipe is from here too-

1 C karo syrup
1 C shortening
1/2 t fine salt
1/2 t extract of choice
1 t clear vanilla
2 lb powdered sugar

After making both the MMF and RBC I mixed them. I think my ratio was about 2/3 MMF and 1/3 RBC. This was really nice to work with. I am told that you can dust with cornstarch or PS to get rid of the shine if you want to.

I hope this makes sense. Just ask if you have questions!

Courtney,

thanks ever so much, you did a great job explaining how you made the cake. I don't know, whether I will ever get the courage to try this, but reading your instructions really made it hit home, what an artist you really are. Your cake is amazing, hats off to you.

Thanks for the nice comments everyone! I guess the shininess is ok for this cake but I'm doing a dragon this weekend and I don't want it to come out all shiny! I'd love to buy some good ready made fondant....I refuse to buy Wiltons. It tastes "fishy" to me.

Jessireb, Yes I mixed both the marshmallow fondant and the rolled buttercream. I got both recipes from this site and posted them above. I mixed about 1/3 RBC and 2/3 MMF.
