How far in advance can I cover a cake board with fondant? Will it crack if done too early?

Any secrets to this method? Just thought it looks nice.

I have never done it myself, but I'll bump you up.

I have done it up to 3 days in advance and haven't had a problem with it cracking using MMF. Nobody eats it anyway, so that isn't an issue either. Have fun covering your first board.

I find it easier to put gel icing on the board, so that your fondant will stick great to the board. I've done boards about 4 days before and not had a problem. Like DrTina said, no one's going to eat it, so it's fine.

Subaru,
When you all bump someone's question up exactly how do you do it? I've wanted to do that myself a couple of times but don't know how. TIA

I do my boards in fondant 3 or more days before so it will dry hard you want to be able to handle it and not leave marks when you put the cakes on top. It will not crack I also do my dummies in fondant and it just hardens. Look at my pic you will see my boards on the pearls and dipped strawberry cakes.

When you cover the board, do you then cut out the center of the fondant (where the cake will sit)? It seems like covering the entire board is such a waste of fondant!

I will be doing a board either tonight or tomorrow. I will covering the whole board, I just use the nasty wilton fondant (that I used a 40% coupon) to cover my board. I will be putting the cake on Friday and put the crumb coat on too and finish on Saturday.

I will be doing the painting of the board. Has anyone done this - put drop of gel colors then drop vodka on the colors and then sponge the colors together. This is why I have to start early so it will dry in time.

CakesByEllen--In the past, I haven't cut out the fondant where the cake will sit, but I would think it would help keep the cake from shifting in transport if your fondant layer is thick. I am going to try that next time!

Do you fold the edges of the fondant under the board? Or do you cut it at the board's edge?

I cut at boards edge. I have tried folding under, but it gets bulky and uneven from overlap in the corners unless you cut it.

I have Nicholas Lodge's instructional video on covering a cake board in fondant. He cuts out the center where the cake will sit so that there's not so much space between the cake and the board. (assuming the cake is sitting on it's own separate board.)

The flower cake in my pictures is on a fondant covered board. I've done this many times. I roll out the fondant, put it on the board, run the smoother over a couple of times, then use a pizza cutter to trim the edge, then hot glue ribbon around the edge to finish. I don't cut the middle out or anything, because I add a border to the bottom of the cake after it's on the board, so it works. This is one of my favorite ways to cover a cake board.

Also, I have painted on them with color/vodka, and it dries pretty quickly- but any part of the cake you can get finished ahead of time can only help you, IMO!

I'm not Saburu, but to bump a topic up, all you have to do is post to it. Simply stating "I don't know, lets see if we can bump this up the line so someone will see it" (or some other small note) and posting that will automatically bring the topic back to the top of the list. Hope that helps icon_smile.gif
