Hi everyone,
It is my dream to open my own home-based cake decorating business.
Currently I am doing a Food Safety course and checking all the requirements to register my kitchen by the start of 2008. My question is though, do you think my cakes are good enough? Don't be nice, be honest? I know I need more practice. I don't need to live off the business, but I would like to bulid it up and grow over time.
Any feedback, suggestions,
Thank you,
Melissa

Melissa,

I can honestly say that you will have no problem selling your cakes in Melbourne. You have placed in the Royal Melbourne Show and that's a BIG deal, plus your cakes are just as good as any others I've seen, and you shouldn't be asking us if we'd buy your cakes, of course we won't, we'd make our own!
You just need to believe in yourself and be confidant about your abilities.
Good luck with it all!

I guess I asked because, although you may want to do something, doesn't mean you should. I love the creating side, but I also know that it takes me a long time to do anything, and I never seem to come up with a simple idea. I know you guys wouldn't buy my cakes, but you live cake, love cakes, breath cake, who better to ask. As a person I am pretty quiet, I sometimes feel I should hide what I do from people, (a bit funny about the attention)instead of being all confident and getting out there and telling the world- I'm not going to be able to be like that if I want to run a sucessful business. Fran, I admire what you and Nati do so much. Like I said, this is my dream. I love doing this, but I want to be realistic. I did Nursing in my last life, I wanted to be a nurse since I was a little girl. Then when I qualified I realised it wasn't what I wanted out of life at all. People were always so down, I wanted to find something that made me happy and makes other happy too. Do you still love it Fran? What you said is true Cris, you do only live once, and I am going to give it a shot. It just feels a bit like jumping into the deep end!

Melissa,

I won't lie, there are days when I get stressed and I wonder why I'm doing this, but the truth is I do love it. Being a cake designer is like delivering flowers for a living, everyone's glad to see you, and apart from an occasional difficult customer or a cake that doesn't behave properly I feel an enormous satisfaction with my work, I truly believe this is what I'm supposed to be doing.
Anytime you'd like to have a chat about it, I'm not far from you and I'd be happy to help icon_smile.gif

Trent: I'm curious...how do you know how much she is charging?

Melissaane: I think your cakes are wonderful. I'm sure you can find customers who will pay what you want to charge. You just need to build up your confidence and not back down when you set a price. Once you start charging lower prices than you want, you set a precedent. Then EVERYONE will expect your cakes to be inexpensive. Your time and creativity are what you are really charging for...not the ingredients.

Good luck!

You're joking right....... your cakes are AMAZING!!!!!!!!!! Definately a high end product. Please please don't under price yourself for your art. You can do 1 cake for $800 or 3 cakes for $300....... sure you get more orders if you charge the $300, but your cakes are good enough to charge the higher price so you can spend the time creating and making amazing cakes. You are what you market yourself to be. Market yourself to the higher end and you will do awesome!

Cookieman, that is so true and a good way of loking at it.
Thank you so much for the support everyone. I think if I just take things one step at a time I'll be right. It's exciting! It's also really nice to be able to talk to people about things. Especially people that are into cake. icon_smile.gif

I think your cakes are beautiful. I was so prepping a nice way to say maybe you should find something else to do and then you cake loaded up!!!! Wow they are amazing and I love them!!

I have a feeling that trent was trying to be funny maybe saying that you're cakes are so gorgeous they would be too high for "him" to buy!

100% YES!! They are so beautiful!! If its what you want to do then DO IT! I've been making cakes what seems like non-stop for a about a year, I loved every second of it. Recently its been really stressful and I haven't enjoyed it as much so I told everyone NO MORE CAKES for at least a month, until my birthday then I'm coming back with a bang. So even if you have those days where you think "Why am I doing this?" Don't worry, It doesn't mean your hearts not in it, maybe you just need a break like I did. I'm taking a break so that I can rebuild my creativity and energy for what I know I love to do.

P.S. Your cakes are DEFINITELY going to sell. No Doubt about that. Not only are they going to sell, but if you price them right they are going to sell for Alot! and Well Deserved.

i'm into my 6th year of having my own biz...

just the other day after i decorated a couple cakes, it occured to me what a small part of the biz the decorating part really is.

your cakes are the great, for me to be able to make the rent and a salary its all about volume, some people get alot of orders for the really involved cakes that take all day, but i'm thinking the market here just wouldn't bear it.

i gotta tell you, this is about the most grueling business to get into , if you're going to make it....it's just not what you'd think it would be....i spend the entire day sunday sleeping from the busy weekends, and my arm and hand hurt so bad sometimes i can barely stand it.

if you've ever seen "hell's kitchen"...it more like that, then add the stress of time constraints and having to be artistic on a time limit.

there are alot of hats to wear....alot of long grueling hours....and ALOT of money going out in overhead every month.....

I guess I was wrong in thinking that most people would say no, as this IS a cake forum and we all make cake! Why buy something you can make yourself with ease? icon_wink.gif

But if I didn't make cake, yes I'd buy yours.

I think you'r cakes are truely amesing. If I lived in Australia I'd by you'r cakes.

I think you can do this full time, you just need to get out and let people see them.
