Any experienced bakers have good tips for a checkerboard cake? I just looked at a couple in the gallery and noticed that they are 3 layers. The teacher gave me 2 cake mixes and told me that I would have cake mix leftover. But one member said that she ran out of cake mix.

Help!

Thanks,
Kelly

I've made a few of them, I have the BC checerboard pan set ( 3 9 inch pans with the plastic insert). I have used just one box mix with small box of pudding, 4 eggs, 1 cup sour cream and 1/2 cup of oil and that worked just fine. There's a shot of one cut in my photos.

I have done it with two DH cake mix with the extra pudding and egg added. Each brand of cake mix makes different amount of batter. and depending on how high you want each layer depends on how much batter you will need. I did have extra left over but cupcakes are always great to have on hand!

You may want to use two boxes if you want your cakes the full heigth of the pan.

I have one in my pictures also if you want to see what i did. I have the pampered chef set i believe... or maybe it is the chicago brand... ok, that is going to bug me now i will have to go look.

One tip I would like to share with you. Have someone holding the divider because when I did mine it slid all over the place and the squares did not come out right. I noticed in the pictures that imbkay13 did are perfect!

I have only used mine twice & the first time I made a huge mess filling the pan with the batter. The last time I used it I put the batter into 2 decorating bags & piped it into the cake pans. Was much easier & cleaner!!!

What's everyone's favorite flavor for checkerboard cakes? I am curious to see so I can make a list of things to try. I happened to find the Wilton checkerboard set at walmart for $8.88. It has a recipe on the back for a yellow and choc cake. I decided to make a peanutbutter choc cake and use a peanut butter cream filling and chocolate frosting for the outside. I think.... the cakes are cooling now, so I trying to make up my mind what kind of choc frosting I want. Anyway, I found a recipe for a chocolate cherry checkerboard and may try that next. This is getting a bit long, so back to my original question, what is your favorite flavor combos for checkerboard cakes.

TIA

How about a strawberry and banana or a lemon and orange or even pineapple and cocoanut. Just giving you a bump!
