I decided that I wanted to make my own birthday cake so that I could practice with mmf. Well, I was trying to get it done last night and could not get the fondant the right consistency. I have never had problems with the few batches I have used before, but usually I don't try to make as dark of a color. I put the red coloring in when I melted the marshmallows and I never could get it right. I tried to cover the bottom layer, but it just tore. I finally decided to remove the mmf and just ice with buttercream since it was midnight and my party was today at 1:00. So when I removed the fondant, somehow I managed to push the layers. I tried to strighten them, but kept making it worse. I just gave up and iced it as it was. I ran out of red coloring at midnight and decided just to ice it in a dark ping buttercream. Then this morning I ran to the store to buy some colormist to make it red. At least that worked. I was so frustrated that I could not even get my cake to look like I wanted it to. I am starting to think that I am never going to get any better at this than I am! Sorry this was so long, but I just needed to rant so I didn't feel as frustrated anymore.

Happy Birthday! I hope you were able to enjoy the day and eat some of the cake, which, I'm sure, was wonderful.

I managed to salvage it, I just loaded a pic of it. Just wasn't as perfect as I saw it in my head. You know how that is. My family and friends thought it was awesome, and said they didn't notice that it was leaning until I pointed it out. I guess I am just too hard on myself.

Happy Birthday party.gif and don't stop trying! All of the red food coloring you had to use on the fondant probably was the problem you were having with the fondant. Next time add extra powdered sugar until it gets to the consistency you need it to be.

I too made my bday cake this month but it did come out the way I wanted it and as silly as it may sound I was so proud of it. I am really sorry yours did not cooperate with you!

Have a super day and I am sure your cake will taste excellent!

Thank you! Everyone on CC is so supportive and I appreciate it so much. It was delicious and in hindsight, it isn't as bad as I thought it was. I am just such a perfectionist. Oh well, cake is cake and when it is a big slice on a plate, it doesn't matter what it looked like anymore.

I am a bit late in wishing you a Happy Birthday, (it is 10.45pm in the U.K.)

Remember there is always next year - and if you get orders for cakes, you will be much better by then - practice on other people's.

I have had this happen before. The cake shifted on me when trying to remove the fondant. Thankfully I had enough time to let it set in the refrigerator so that it hardened up a bit and then I ran a long serrated knife through the filling and reset the top layer on the bottom so that it was centered. Thankfully it worked really well...Hope it helps in the future!! icon_smile.gif
