I need to make a "wavy" look on the side of my cake with a comb - I noticed someone mentioned a non-crusing buttercream for this in another thread. Is that what I should use? Does that mean it doesn't ever crust? It sounds kind of messy. Any advice?

you should be able to comb your regular icing after you put it on the cake, dont try to get it smooth first, the comb will remove excess, best to use a turntable when combing.

You can comb buttercream frosting if you comb it right after you put it on before it crusts. It's much easier than the non crusting BC which is messier.

I agree with dogluvr. You should be able to comb your crusting buttercream, if you comb it right after you apply it.
