Here is my carousel cake. I wanted to use MMF because of the taste but I wish I had used Wilton since it is a firmer fondant. I think I would have been happier with the results. The stripes were hard to work with because the MMF was so soft. The colors, circles and stripes match the birthday napkins. I chose to leave the middle layer white so the carousel horses would stand out on their own. I was sort of afraid they would clash and not stand out if I has put stripes there. What do you think?
I don't know how to make my picture smaller so here is the link.

Thank you, the colors came from the napkin, so that was easy. The horses I think came from The Dollar Store. This cake was for someone on my husband's side of the family and she already had the horses.
What I meant was, what do you think about me leaving the middle layer white and not putting stripes on it? I wasn't fishing for compliments, even though I appreciate them.

I think it was a good idea to leave it white. The horses are enough decoration that it doesn't make it look bare or anything. Would have been too busy otherwise, I think.
I think leaving it white was a good idea, or at least a solid color.
I think maybe you mmf was too soft. If it was really sticking to the mat, perhaps it was already too soft, then adding more crisco to it would make it even softer. It takes some practice to know the right consistency.
I absolutely love those colors you used, so pretty!! And I think it turned out great=) Jen
I sure would like to get the feel for the right consistency of MMF. I have some of the MMF leftover so I will play with it next week-end. The MMF was so tacky today. The beehive in my photos was also done with MMF but I didn't have this problem. Then again, that was such a little cake and it was easy to cover. I have never covered anything this big before and I don't plan to any time soon. I plan on sticking with BC and practice getting nice edges around the corners and at the tops of my round cakes.
Next week I need to make a stack cake with a bow on top. I will use some of my MMF to make stripes on this cake. One thing I will do is let them dry a little before I pick them up. The young lady wants stripes on her cake but they won't be like the carousel cake. The stripes will be fewer and father in between. This cake will be pink and brown with alternating stripes and a brown loop bow on top. The bottom layer will be 2 -8" layer cakes iced in brown with pink stipes and the next layers 2 - 6" layers will be iced in pink BC with brown stripes with the brown loop bow at the top.

I think you did a great job and leaving the middle section undecorated was a good choice. ![]()
IMHO decorating the middle section would have taken away from the horses and would have looked overly busy.
The colors match the white horse in the photo. Well done over all!
Make sure to put this in a photo album to look at for reference for your next order.
BTW... Did you receive a postive response from the family member? That is what really counts - ![]()
I think if it is tacky then either it was too soft (ie not enough powdered sugar) or maybe you added too much crisco while rolling it out. Or perhaps both. I make my mmf by hand (no mixer) then you can feel the dough the whole time and add powdered sugar until it feels right. It shouldnt be sticky or overly stretchy. It should feel smooth...I want to say dry, but not like crumbly dry, just dry to the touch. maybe if you got your hands on some premade fondant just to get the idea of the right consistency that should help. Good luck on your next one!
