Maybe you could do a FBCT of the state of alabama?

I have thought of that, but I have no clue how to do a FBCT. I read the directions here on this site but...hmm, don't get it!

Are you any good at carving? Could maybe make a sheet cake or something and carve it into shape?

Maybe you could celebrate more subtley, through flavors?
Alabama's state nut is the pecan. It has two "official" fruits, the blackberry and the peach. How about making a cake incorporating a couple of these ingredients? Maybe a white cake with either a peach- or blackberry-flavored buttercream, sprinkled with finely chopped pecans. Instead of a frozen buttercream transfer of Alabama, you could decorate the top by making a simple paper stencil of Alabama (find a map of the state online, print out, carefully cut along the outline with small, sharp scissors, preserving the border), laying it on the top of the cake, and sprinkling the pecans within the outline. Then (obviously) remove paper.

You could do an outline of both states on the cake with a space in between and then draw the driving oute with a little van in on the road. It doesn't matter if your not great at free handing no one will know exactly what shape the states are. Use red with and blue borders and you can put stop sign, arrows and other sign aroudn the cake- Hope that helps

I love the idea of the outline of both states and a highway bridging the two states. I car or van (fondant figurine) would be great on the highway. You could really do alot with this! You could bake a few sheet cakes, freeze and stack them, and this way you could carve both states (color each in it's respective state color and maybe put a small state bird or state flower somewhere on it) out of them. You could put both states on a cake board, next to each other and then make a fondant strip (for highway complete with yellow dotted middle lane) and car headed into Alabama. Last but not least, you have to include a 'WELCOME TO ALABAMA!' for the state!

Just an idea- but, you could do it! Good luck and i'd love to see the finished project!!!

I was going to suggest the exact same thing...two states with a highway between, like this one:

Good Luck! thumbs_up.gif

My husband was stationed at Fort Lewis when we met. He got out shortly after we got married so we never had to move. But we watched a lot of friends pack up and leave. Good luck with everything it takes to move so far away.
I love the cakes that look like shipping boxes packed for a move. Those are really cute.

Here's some things that could maybe help...state insect is the monarch butterfly, flower is the camellia japonica, flag, Alabama/Auburn are rival collegiate football teams, and a link to state trivia factoids. BTW - where in Alabama are y'all moving to?

Wow, all of you have some great ideas, thanks!
We are moving to Maxwell Air Force Base. My husband is in the Army but is going to an Air Force school there. We will only be there for a year.
