I just baked my first large sheet cake for my son's 3rd bday tomorrow and of course I baked it too long and now it's dry. I read about the simple syrup and it sounds like a good idea, but will it make the cake really sweet? Also, any suggestions on the flavors as I have never done this before. All I have is butter, vanilla and lemon...

I appreciate any suggestions......

no, won't over sweeten it.

simple syrup is just sugar and water (w/ maybe a touch of corn syrup)

very thick - 1:2 cups water/sugar
thick - 1:1 cups water/sugar
medium - 2:1 water/sugar
thin - 3:1 water/sugar

put in saucepan, boil, cool, use or store. add flavoring essence as desired.

flavor to use depends upon flavor of cake.

white/yellow -- butter, lemon, almond. (I"m partial to lemon. Almond w/ a touch of butter is good too)
chocolate: almond, butter, coffee, hazelnut, etc (so many things go well w/ chocolate. if just want moist without identifiable flavor, either just the syrup plain or vanilla w/ a touch of butter)

Thank you for the feedback. It's on the stove now...

To make matters worse, the cake split in half as I turned it onto the board...C'est La Vie. Thomas the train may have a bumpy track icon_smile.gif
