Ok, this was supposed to be a very simple cake order. The customer drew a picture of what she wanted - bride and groom's initials and wedding date with "Congratulations" on the side - great, pretty simple, I can handle that. Sheet cake for her sister's engagement party, 1 layer, 40 servings. Chocolate fondant - I asked my CC friends for a recipe. Fuschia letters and numbers - I actually have Americolor Fuschia - great! This will be a snap.

Then, she is driving the cake from Texas to Florida! Uh, this is going to be a pretty large cake - hope she has an SUV! Let's see - will definitely put the cake on a wooden board rather than double or triple cardboards - no problem, I have one on hand.

Next, the cake flavor needs to be carrot. (with chocolate fondant??) Ok, I won't be eating it so no problem. icon_smile.gif

I work full-time so, go home night before last and get ready to bake - have a message - she's FLYING to Florida, not driving!! Oh no, this cake is going to be huge, and heavy with the wooden board! Gotta figure out something different. What will she be able to carry on her lap, on the plane?? (And she doesn't really want round cake)

Talked to her yesterday morning - ok to go with hexagon, now will have to be 2-layer, that's fine. Dowel, dowel, dowel. I have a beautiful hatbox (with cake pictures and wording on it) that my best friend bought for me a few months back - the cake will fit in it. Sent DH to Hobby Lobby to find ANY hat box that exact size, don't care how it's decorated, in case I don't get it back.

So, left work an hour early yesterday because now I will BAKE, and DECORATE on the same day (thank goodness I made BC, and fondant last night), and I have another cake order, last minute, but small, no big deal. Got it done, 3 hours sleep.

Am I CRAZY?!?!? Why do I do this to myself??? I HOPE this cake makes it on the plane and to Florida!!!!

The customer came by my office this morning to pick up the cake (never met her - she works with my daughter) and she was sooooo pleased with the cake and was full of compliments and thanked me for following her design, even with all the changes. She made me feel so good about all the work! I guess that is why I keep doing this. (And, she wants to order another cake! - will call me next week.)

Great job on the cake! What kind of chocolate fondant is that? I flew a two-tier cake from NY to FL (and another time a 7" gumpaste topper from NY to FL - hmmm i see a pattern here icon_wink.gif maybe I need to go somewhere else on vacation?) and they made the trip beautifully. So long as she brought the cake as her carry-on, I'm sure it made it fine! Let us know!
