I used the recipe for the No Fail Sugar Cookies (they did not fail me) but I wonder how to decorate on them. I tried using the royal icing recipe, which also worked great. I took the time to make different colors and everything. I just can't seem to figure out how to decorate them and the make them look pretty. Some people say to do an out line and then fill in. Well mine just looked and OUT-RIGHT mess so I threw them away. PLEASE HELP ME.

MissJ, Don't feel bad. I thought the same thing about my cookies when I started last month. I am learning to do the outlines and let them dry then go back and fill them in. Some of them lookes a little rough but at least I am getting in the practice it takes to learn. Just hang in there and with the help of the great people on here we can learn about cookie decorating together.

you know I used to outline mine, but now I find that it works best to use icing the consistency of pancake batter I guess......and I actually use a baby spoon.....they are the little plastic ones that say wash or toss....they're like 2.00 at wal mart for like 12 of them.........they work perfect......I put a spoonfull of icing on the cookie and then use the back of the spoon to push it and smear it to the edges and keep adding more until I'm happy with the look...........I'll show you a pic. of some I did like this.......a lot quicker than doing the outline first!

Thanks for sharing that technique for icing them. I will try that and see how it works for me. I am just learning and trying to get the outlining done is not as simple as it seems to be. Maybe if I try this way and then outline the design they will come out better. Will try this this weekend and post pictures.

Before I tried my first batch I had read to hold your tip in the air over your cookie as you outline. I did this and have not had any problems. Also I always start with my royal thinned down ever so slightly for my outlining. I have tried a couple of times not to outline but I just make a mess and it goes over the edge! I am pretty happy with the outlining for now as I get better I will try and take off my training wheels and do it without the outline. I do like the baby spoon idea I will pick some up next time I go to Walmart.

Today I decorated my first batch of cookies (intending to make a cookie bouquet if all goes well)... the first few I outlined and then filled and then tried the un-outlined... much, much easier !!!!! The suggestion that the consistency be like pancake batter was perfect !!! Thanks for that tip KHalstead !!!
