He asked me to make a Mothers Day cake for him for tomorrow. This will be my first paid cake. EEEK. LOL. Now I have to go get ideas and find something fantastic! LOL.

I made this cake last year and the mom loved it. Its pretty simple!! I think i've posted this before. The sides are plaid. pretty easy, just need a steady hand.

I do like the plaid (I LOVE plaid in general) Can you tell me how you did the plaid? Is it all done in the small tip first then finished with the flat end of the basket weave? Is there a pic of the side of the cake so I can see it better? Thank You!

Congratulations on your first order! I just had my first order for last week, its scary and exciting all at the same time. I know everyone there really liked it, cause i had a spy icon_lol.gif my mom was invited to the party, so she kept her ears open for me. I think a mom would like anything with roses on it. Good luck

Congrats as well!!!

Another easy and always stunning decorative thing to do is the basket weave on the sides and some decorative element on top, flowers, etc. If you are adventurous, there is always the garden fence you can make either out of white chocolate or fondant with a flower garden theme on top.

Matha Stewart did one recently on a round cake, but I have seen them done on square.

The plaid on that cake is great. I would love to know more how you did the lines

sorry guys, didn't check back!! I did the plaid with three different colors each with a different tip. A basket weave tip for one, a #3 for one, and a #2 for one. You just sort of have to figure it out as you go along. I looked at the Whimisical bakehouse book for guidance. The key is a VERY steady hand, try not to let it break off, and try to keep the lines spaced right. I always border it with the wide stripe because i cant get the areas where the lines meet to look good!! Let me know if you need anymore help!!

ps- i'll see if i have a better photo of the side!!

oh yea, one more thing. It is impossible to make a coninuous band around the cake (well at least for me it is!!) so i make sure that my breaks land on the same color of the vertical line. Does that make sense?? That way it doesn't show so bad.

Super Cute I love the plaid cake. I would try doing a basketweave and cover the whole top in buttercream roses. It will take a little time, but it will be pretty easy and will look very impressive.
