Hi everyone! Well, I know some of you can commisserate with me! My coworker has asked me to do a 50th birthday cake for his wife for May 26th. There will be around 40-50 people at the party. The only thing he'll tell me (and it was like pulling teeth to get this much out of him) was that she likes pastels and he wants french vanilla cake with buttercream. The rest is up to me! What in the world should I do? Any suggestions? I want to do something that will really be nice and impressive, as so many people will be seeing this and I'm trying to build up a small business, but there's still a lot I don't have experience with. The only flowers I've made are royal icing roses. I tried fondant roses once, but it seemed to take FOREVER and I am so impatient! If anyone has an idea for a great impressive 50th birthday cake for a woman, I'm open to any and all suggestions!!! Pictures more than welcome! Thanks!!!!!

Tracy

I love the "Over the Hill Gift Cake" by Traci. It's done in black but there's no reason you couldn't change the colors to pastels. Add a little sparkle to it and it could be really pretty!

I am doing a 60th b-day cake for my MIL on the 27th. There isn't much to choose from other than "Over the Hill" styles, (My MIL would HATE that). So I am going to do a topsy turvy style cake. THere is one in the galleries that cakesbyallison posted that is awesome. I am going to try to replicate that, but instead of a bow on top, I'll do the number candles and currly-q's.

I've got 2 ideas for you:
I did a cake once that had the saying "There are ## candles on this cake, how many breaths will it take?" But that doesn't help you with decorations.

2nd - I think "present" cakes always impress people!

I like to do a search for humorous birthday cards and get ides from that. I am doing a cake for a co-workers husbands 50th birthday for May 27th! I asked her what his hobbies or likes are. She said likes to fish, but really likes collecting antiques. I searched the web and found mugs with different sayings for example "Genuine Antique Person, 100% original parts, some worn, some obsolete". I'm going to go with that idea and use a chocolate transfer of an old guy fishing. If you can get the guy to give you some idea of what his wife's intrests are maybe you can come up with a theme that way.

in alamosweets pictures there is a photo cake that is just gorgeous. I am making a version of it for my mom's 50th this month. Alamosweets has even offered to print out the edible images & ups them to me, since I don't have access to an edible printer.

First of all, are you wanting to do something unique, funny, or classic? From the bit you wrote it sounds like maybe classic is the way to go. Poeple always find a basketweave impressive.

I did a gag 50th cake for my aunt - it was a toilet cake.

If she is a funny lady you could try something like that. You could girly it up with a fluffy pink doily on the back of the toilet and on the seat cover. -

But if you want it to look, sweet and nice - I wouldn't go in this direction. But, if she's got a great sence of humor, it could be really fun. There is a picture in my gallery - I haven't figured out how to attach pictures to this thing yet.

I'm thinking more along the lines of classy instead of humorous. If I knew her better, or if it were just a small family function, I would go humorous, but since they're having a pretty big bash with all their friends and family, I think I should go with something more classic. I really like the whimsical cake. Maybe I could try something like that with softer colors. Keep the ideas coming! You guys are great!!!

potatocakes: Twinsline7 did a really pretty pastel package cake...I think something like that would be perfect for a 50th birthday party....you could make another one & stack them if you need more servings..
