Seeing as I've mastered cookies, cupcakes, MMF (joking...
) I'd now like to attempt my first cake - a fairly simple (I hope!) rectangle with Snakes and Ladders fondant decorations. I don't want to make a cake from scratch - I see a lot of talk about cake mixes on this site. Do I just make it according to the package instructions - I think it would be too moist and soft to hold up. How do I adapt it so that I can lay fondant, decorations, etc. on it?
I might also try a different design that looks like a river bank, so I'd have to place a cake "boulder" on top of the main cake. Will the boulder stay where I place it, or will it sink into the main cake?
I don't know if I've explained myself well enough - I guess my worry is that my cake mix will be too soft and fluffy to be able to place things on it.
Please keep in mind, I'm a COMPLETE novice at cakes, but I've been inspired by this site and an old book I found - would love to attempt this.
Thank you.
I always use DH and a lot of people on here do use a variety, but I've never heard of any problems with weight. You should be ok.
If you're putting a VERY LARGE fondant piece on the cake, maybe you should put a board under it and a dowel or two under that.
Are you covering the whole cake in fondant or will the decorations be the only thing fondant?
good Luck!
The whole Snakes/Ladders cake is covered in fondant - but in a whole lot of little squares, not one big piece, and then the little snakes, ladders, dice are placed on top of that.
The riverbank cake has large pieces of oddly-shaped fondant placed on it, and I'm supposed to make it look rough, let it crease and fold over here and there, to look more natural. I thought this one might be simpler to make, as it doesn't seem to need perfect fondant and precision placement. I can make the boulder any size I want.
Also, silly me
, I'm not quite sure what DH is - is it Duncan Hines cakemix or dear husband ?(how do I use him in a cake, just slather him in buttercream and he's good to go?) ![]()
lol.........I think it was Duncan Hines in that reply but it can be Dear Hubby Darn Hubby or a lot of others depending on your mood..............ummm.....I use cake mixes all the time and what I do is add a pudding mix (dry mix) of the same flavor into the cake mix with an extra egg, tsp. vanilla, and I switch the water in the recipe to milk and it makes more of a pound cake consistency but still keeping the nice rich flavor........and it's still moist...great for carving and and stacking and such.......I use this recipe all the time and it tastes wonderful people always want the recipe and I tell them, it's just a box mix......and they think I'm fully of it.....they say "no way, that's a mix, my mixes never taste like that"!!! hahahhaha good luck , sounds like two pretty cool cakes, can't wait to see pics.
Thank you! Sounds yummy! One more question: if I use MMF, can I use as is or do I have to add that gum-hardener stuff? - the riverbank has a little Tom-Sawyer guy dozing/fishing.
I've got my digital camera FULL of pictures - vacation, family, cookies, cupcakes, etc. If I can ever figure out how to get them off the camera and into the computer I will post. ( My computer is so outdated, I don't even know if I can use the camera software...)
