ok, so I'm doing a pregnant belly cake (sorry for those of you who hate people/animal cakes). It's for a shower that will only have about 24 people tops. What I'm doing is putting the belly cake on top of a 12 inch square cake....BUT ONLY ONE LAYER of the 12 inch square. I'm only doing one layer because the 12 inch sq feeds 48, and I don't need that many.
So....I need your opinion on two things:
1. Being that the 12 in bottom cake is only one 2 inch layer, should I still try to torte and fill it? If enough people think I should....then I was considering cutting the cake into 4 pieces to torte it (so it won't break) and then putting my filling in. Is it bad not to have a filling???
And
2. The mom to be loves daffodils. So, I tried making some today. I can't quite get the little flourishy part on the middle section. My question to you all is, "should I use the daffodils (picture below). My husband says no. He didn't think they looked that great. I do have silk roses I could use on the cake so it's no big deal. But I thought I'd ask here.
Please....give your HONEST feedback. I don't need my ego to be stroked and I'm not looking for any compliments. I'm looking for honest opinions from people who KNOW!
I appreciate your thoughts on both these questions!
Thanks so much!
Haven't seen the pic of your daffodils yet, but if it's any help there's a great tutorial on how to make daffodils on Culpitt.com:

I used it to make the daffodils on my Easter cake. It was my first time making flowers and I found the instructions very easy to follow.

Unsure what you mean by cutting into 4 pieces to torte. But being only a one layer (2 in.) it is not necessary to torte unless you are wanting to put a special filling or something. But IMHO only torte it once.
As for the daffadills, they look pretty good - the only thing is the trumpet ( that top part) needs to be frillier (is that a word) Any way take your wooden roller (can't remember the exactly what it's called at this moment) and frill around the top edge. Use back n forth short strokes around the edge to thin it and make it rufflely. hope this make sense.
personally I think the daffodils look like daffodils, they look good! The only thing that throws me off a little is the lavendar color. I can only remember seeing them include shades of cream, yellow, orange-yellow. But I am not a huge flower person anyways. The mom-to-be will love your daffodils because they are for her.
thanks you guys. I really appreciate your honest answers. I'll try a few more dafs and see if I can get that frilly part down. I can do it just fine when I'm making rose petals, not sure why I'm not getting it on these.
And Crystalina....you're right about the color. There is no such thing as violet daffodils! At least not that I've seen. I was messing with the luster dust colors that I have....which don't include yellow, unfortunately.
Oh well.
i dont know about the daffs, but I wouldnt torte either.
I've decided to just go ahead and make the second 12 inch cake, so I can use my filling between the layers.
I'll most likely be going with the silk roses (or fondant daisies)....since my day's been completely slowed down by my active 7 month old and 6 year old who's been home all day with a fever.
I just wanted to show you some pink Daffs!!

I think your daffodils look great! You definitely need somethin in the middle of them. and then they will be perfect! (I like the color - depending on what color the cake is!)
Yeah sorry the pistil/stamen. You could make the stamen with fondant around a toothpick and then stick that into the flower and then into the cake so it ends up about even with the top of the trumpet part. If you pinch the end of the stamen to make it look a little like an x or * then it will look pretty realistic. I am going to include another link. this one shows several pink daffs. It would look good to color the trumpet part a soft pink or lavender and then add the luster dust too!
I can't wait to see them If you do them!
More pinks- see the stamen in the top right corner of the group

Why not purple? If they make pink ones then one day soon there will be purple. So go with the purple one. Just frill the throat out more.
Cakes done....pictures are posted.
thanks you guys, for all your opinions. I really take them to heart. I also appreciate that people were honest instead of just patronizing me with "they look great" stuff!
Anyway....I went to bed last night early with a migraine....woke up early this morning to finish this cake. Worked on the daffodils some more and got them a little bit more frillier. I decided to go with just white (and luster dust)...but then last minute, my mom told me to add two fo the purple ones....so I did. I was happy with it...(especially knowing that no one at the shower knows a thing about cake decorating! so they were all impressed!)
Thanks again....
and oh my gosh, Marthajo! Those daffodils you showed here are GORGEOUS! I love those pink ones! Beautiful!
Thanks for all your help!
