How do I use my paste colors to "paint" on gumpaste or other types of icing? Do I mix it with a little water first? I trgied it on gumpaste last night and royal icing before and each time it looks awful. Could really use some help. I can't add any pix to the site so far today so I can't show you what I mean.

you need some type of alcohol.....or extract......not water...water will make it remain tacky.......if you get the americolor brand colors you can use them straight out of the bottle.....if you're using wilton, mix it with some vodka or lemon extract or something.
I've used Wilton Paste colors by mixing a little of the paste color taken on a toothpick and adding it to a small amount of clear vanilla. You still want it to be like a thin paint consistency and not very runny. I've used it to paint on fondant and on royal icing covered cookies. Hope this will help you out.
I use my Wilton colors to paint with all the time. Just remember to keep them out of flourescent light if you are making the flowers ahead of time as they will become dull and not pretty at all. I usually paint mine the night before I put them on the cake. I use vanilla extract to mix with when I paint them.

Bella, have you ever had your vanilla extract "crystalize" while you're using it to mix with your colors? I had that happen recently and I'm not sure why??? It still worked fine with my colors but it was just odd to me.

hmm Can't say that I have elly. Maybe something "else" that got into it. But I'm not sure. I will have too look into that though. You have me curious now. lol Did the colors still turn out ok?

Yep! Colors were still fine. It happened with the butterfly cake I made. Maybe it was because I kept dipping into the little amount of extract I had in a separate palette?? That was what looked to have crystals in it, not the actual colors I was mixing. Hummmm. I'm stumped. Oh well, at least the colors still worked just fine
Think I'll try clear alcohol next time.
Thanks anyway!!!
Ok, I must be doing something wrong, because you guys all did what I did and I get all these lumps of paste in my colors....are you all using paintbrushes? ![]()

Yep! Paintbrushes.
How much paste are you using at once? It doesn't take much at all. How fresh is your paste? It tends to get on the lumpy side if its aged at all.
You've also got to be sure to mix your liquid (extract or alcohol) in pretty good and you want the consistency of ink. It shouldn't be thick at all. Almost dripping off your brush. You only need to put a little paste out on your palette with a tooth pick, not much compared to putting paint on a palette. I hope this helps you out some! ![]()
