I need to pick your brains. I made a 2-layer 8" cake for my 18 year old step daughter's birthday and I thought I was going to have enough left over batter for a 6" 2-layer cake to make for my mom for mother's day. I only have one 6" layer and I don't know what to do with it. I thought about torting it a couple of times and filling to make it higher, then decorating with fondant, but I am not sure. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do with this lonely little cake?

I freeze mine in this situation, but if you want or need to use it, I would do just what you said - torte it and decorate.

If you look at my photos, I have pictures of a few little one layer 6" cakes, hearts, I think, but the idea is the same. They can look really cute all by themselves. Just don't put them on a plate that will dwarf them! icon_smile.gif

Cakeasyoulikeit,
Your cakes are beautiful! I love the one on the white place with ribbon laced through it- I have a cake plate very similar to that- maybe I will do this for my mom!

Cakeasyoulikeit, I cannot believe I've never noticed this before! You live in Sterling?! I grew up in Sterling, and my dad and FIL still live there. I grew up right off Sterling Blvd! That's so amazing!!!

Hey RaRaRobyn!

That's so crazy! You're certainly a long ways off now! We live in Cascades, right by the Giant and Home Depot, if you've been here recently. icon_smile.gif

Use your left over cake to make cake balls. Then make a new cake for Mom.

why not cut it in half and stand the halves on the flat edge next to each other and make your mom a 3-d purse cake or make up bag or something....and mold out some things from MMF to go on the side for decorations.....lipstick, compact, etc.

I made 6" cakes for my kids to decorate and give to their Godmothers as mothers day gifts. Seeeing as how I have 8 children and other cakes to do besides those, I only did one per cake also. My pln was to do exactly what you said- torte and fill, cover in fondant and let the kids decorate with edible markers.

Oh you're near Joe's Crab Shack! MMM LOL...Mine and my husbands "special place" is the fountain on Rt. 7 near Olive Garden? Ever been there? It's like an office building, with the big pond. It's our place. We go back to Virginia twice a year! icon_smile.gif

Great,
well, now my husband asked if I had any leftover's from the cake last night- I usually bake him some cupcakes, and I didn't this time. So now I am torting and frosting my little 6" cake for my hubby to consume tonight! Oh well, have to keep the man happy! icon_biggrin.gif

Kerri, I do that too!
Make little cakes and put them in the freezer just for the hubby.
He likes cake but not frosting.
I pop them in the microwave when ever he asks for one.
Warm cake on demand.....that man will never leave me!
