So I decided today that I'm going to enter into my very first competition this summer at my state fair! I'm excited about it. I'm also entering into the Fine Art category (my first time in the "professional" fine arts instead of "non-professional"
) and the Photography category.
Anyways...back to the cake stuff! What do you all do for dummy cakes? It says that entries must be fake...no real cakes allowed. I know a lot of people use styrofoam, but how do you get rid of the edge?
Also...which category do you think I should enter?
*Tiered or stacked - brial or anniversary
*Non-tiered - general birthday
*Non-tiered - special occasion
*Non-tiered - bridal or baby shower
Thanks!
Not sure what you mean by an edge on styrofoam cakes, but I recently got some cake dummies at a super price from www.dallasfoam.com, and shipping was quick and affordable as well. They have lots of different sizes too.
I guess which cake category you enter should depend on where your comfort zone is, or if you're doing it to generate business interest, which category you want more business in. (does that make sense? I'm really tired tonight. LOL) I am planning to enter my county fair cake decorating contest for the first time this summer too. I'm hoping to enter a tiered wedding cake and a tiered birthday cake (which I will be doing themed for a first birthday)
Don't know if that helps you at all! (?) Good Luck!
Hi clb,
I entered my State Fair last year for the first time and had no idea what the competition was. I never looked at those exhibits before and boy was I shocked at what some people entered. I really had no idea but assumed since it was something thousands of people would see that the enterants would make something really nice. So that's what I tried to do.
There were a few different catagories like pro, intermediate, beginner and childrens. I entered in the intermediate catagory and actually won. I was shocked and super thrilled as it was my very first contest. And not to toot my own horn but when I saw all the other cakes, it was no wonder. Most of them were ...well...let's just say my 6 yr olds could have done something similar.
I used stryofoam dummies too but a lot of the people entered real cakes. Big mistake! They had sit on display for the full length of the Fair so many of them were falling apart and getting really nasty looking after a week or so and were removed. ( hopefully they'll know better next time)
As for which catagory to enter, I thought for sure there would be a lot of wedding cakes but at my Fair there were only two. Most people did birthday or holiday cakes.
Anyway, super good luck and be sure to post your cake!
