I bought 3 bags of unbleached flour for my NSFC (don't ask me why) and as I am scooping it out of the bag it smelled like dirt. icon_confused.gif

When I finished baking my cookies I had my SIL try one and she told me they tasted "earthy". I guess her it was her way of trying to be nice. I mean they did not taste terrible, but is there anything I can do to mask the "earthy" taste? I am afraid to add any flavorings.

The very same thing happened to me!! when I opened the bag the odor was overwhelming!! I also purchased unbleached not sure if it had anything to do with it or not icon_confused.gif I did try adding a bit of almond extract when I baked but they did not taste right so I just threw all of it away. Better safe than sorry!! I had purchased mine at Shoprite not sure if that matters!

Is it possible that the flour was rancid?

I always buy unbleached also and never noticed a smell. I usually buy King Arthur brand, though a couple of times I bought Gold Medal. The only problem I've had is once the Gold Medal flour seemed more lumpy than usual, like it had been exposed to humidity or something, and I had flour lumps in a cake I made with it so from now on, I stick with King Arthur.
