I have never done a stacked cake before and really want to do one for Mother's Day. Part of the problem is that my family will not eat that much cake. We have had so much cake lately that no one will eat more than a piece or two.

What I really am thinking about doing is baking 2 square 8" layers and cutting one down to 6". Then I want to torte the layers and stack.

My question is since it technically will only be 2 layers do I need to dowell the cake?

Any help would ba appreciated. TIA

I would put a central dowel in it if you're going to transport it somewhere but if its staying right there, I wouldnt' see the need.

Thank you for the help. Should I ice the two layers together or separately then stack? If I ice then stack how do I stack without messing up the icing since I am not doweling it?

Thanks for your help.

You should ice them seperately and put a board under the 6" cake. Wrap the board in saran wrap or something...I use glad press n seal.

You ice the 6" cake while it's on this board and very carefully pick it up & place on the other cake. Just take your time....you can do it w/o messing up your icing...then add your bottom border to the top cake.

Good Luck!!

Thank you so much for the help. I have the cake in the oven now. I am going to freeze it until I am ready to decorate on Saturday. I will post a picture when I am done and let you know how it turns out.
