I want to make a rainbow to stand up on a cake. My question is, should I use gumpaste or fondant with gum tex in it? The fondant never seems to harden enough to stand up on a cake, but will it if I put gum tex in? My dd's birthday party is Saturday and I want to make sure I have enough time for this to harden. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much!

I prefer using gumpaste for anything that needs to be rock hard (like an object that needs to stand up). Depending on the thickness of the gumpaste - it normally takes at least 48 hours to dry if it's not real thick. I have put a spot light over the item (not too close though) to make it dry quicker. I've heard some people here on CC have actually put the items in the oven to shorten the drying time.... icon_confused.gif I've been happy with the light method. Another method of making the rainbow could be using color flow. I've also used that for items that need to be rock hard. Hope this helps. thumbs_up.gif

I don't work in fondant so I do not know about that but that is not enough time to get gumpaste hard unless you have a good way to get it to dry fast....

how about chocolate ? or if you do not need to eat it frost cardboard or colorflow on cardboard.

I do know if you make it from gumpaste and stick tyhe ends into the cake it will soften and fall over I did that with goal posts once

i would use gumpaste over fondant. but i agree with the previous post, saturday is cutting it a little close, so chocolate is a great alternative. definately not color flow. I did a color flow rainbow once and it took forever to dry
