hiya,
im fairly new to cake decorating but as of yet i am loving it and i think improving with each cake i make.
when i made the last one (playboy) i purchase a icing smoothing tool that i found to be fantastic and wish id had it from the first cake as it would have made life simpler.
what i want to know is is there anything you would class as an invaluable tool that i should get to help me out along the way? figure if i get a few things at a time as i go along that will help without costing me an arm and leg in out lay. just not sure what i need lol
when i took the last cake to its recipient i was asked whether i would make a wedding cake for my boyfriends aunty, just a 3 tier she says as if its nothing lol. of cause i went yeah sure an now am having a huge panic thinking a wedding cake may be a bit extravagent but i think with the right tools and a bit of practice before hand i might pull it off. i sense im going to be asking for a lot of advice during this project!
thanks for any advice you can give

The large icing tip. I have found this to be a real time-saver. I use it with the Ateco Flex-Bag, which is designed for use with this tip. It is a very large bag, and can hold a lot of icing.

Welcome to cake Cake Central!
I agree with the icing tip. It is one of my favorite tools!
I also need with me....
VIVA TOWELS
WAXED CAKE BOARDS
ATECO TURNTABLE
LEVEL (From any home improvement store. Keeps your cake in check as you're stacking to prevent leaning)
STRAWS (Not for doweling! I use them for insterting wires into the cake so they don't come into contact with the cake)
OFFSET LARGE SPATULA
SILPAT (Won't roll out fondant on anything else!)
PARCHMENT PAPER (I use it for everything from lining pans, to making bags. Invaluable!)
That's my quick list of "must-haves" ![]()

Oh, yes, definitely parchment paper!

My "always use" is a very good mixer, a high density foam roller for smoothing, the large ice tip, for cupcakes, the cupcake courier and the 103? tip (to make large swirls), for making chocolate transfers, a heating pad to keep the chocolates warm, and I like the large smoothing spatula too.

How exciting to get an inquiry for a wedding cake! Don't panic ... remember a wedding cake is just a lfew little cakes stacked together. YOu make them each one at a time.
My list of "I can't make a cake without....." includes baking strips, turntable, the roller for the Melvira Method, at least 2 16x20 cooling racks. On the "nice to have list" is 2 bowls and 2 beaters for my KA.
thanks for the advice guys! thats what i love about this site, really feels like people care about each other. hopefully once i learn a bit more ill be able to help others too, thats what its all about!
im off to the shop section now lol......
