Hi everyone, I am fairly new to cake decorating. Does anyone know how to make the pre-made icing that you can buy from the shops. Is that the same as fondant?

W E L C O M E ! ! !

(warning this site is addictive!)

------------------------

if by pre-made icing you mean that stuff you roll out like pie dough and then cover the cake w/ it so you get a very smooth finish ---

well, this is the main recipe everyone raves about:

and this is the other one that is getting rave reviews:http://www.cakecentral.com/cake_recipe-3183-1-Rhondas-Ultimate-MMF.html

easy to make, easy to flavor and so much better than Wilton's

Can that be used on butter cakes though or is it too heavy. The one I saw was in a womens weekly cake book for children's cakes. You knead it and then roll it out. Is the MMF mainly used for wedding cakes? Sorry for so many questions, just curious

MMF can be used on almost any cake. It is heavier, but you roll it to the thickness you want. Usually 1/4 inch or so.

MMF can be used for pretty much any kind of cake -- so long as the cake has enough "body" -- a firm cake is best.

yep, knead it, roll it out and then have at it.

some more help:
http://atecousa.net//learn/ <<< click on the Satin Ice tutorials.
Satin Ice is a commercial fondant that is very good. The techniques for it and MMF are the same.

can also color MMF and then cut out all kinds of shapes, etc. and put them on the cake too as decorations.

if you browse through the galleries you will see many cakes made this way.

the galleries of some of the gals who do wonders in fondant:

and that's just the TIP of the proverbial iceberg.

Thanks. I am sure I will have some fun experimenting with it.
