I actually think this turned out ok. It is 2 8" layers, filled only with bc. My dh and best friend thought I should have charged more (they saw what I went through); my dd thought (although she did not actually say so - it was for her trainer) I should have charged less. What do you think I should have charged?

Thanks to princesscris and EROS for your help and support on making a mermaid. I did take the easy way - the head and torso are a doll pick. I appreciate your help.

Well, it is a wonderful cake! Your mermaids are great! Just saw that you said that they are picks. they are very pretty! I'm not sure what I would charge if they are picks. How much did you charge?

The cake is gorgeous and your mermaids are just beautiful! I love the swimming mermaid - very clever.

That's probably not enough but I usually undercharge also. I really like the cake. Good job!

dont take this the wrong way, but are you insane??? icon_eek.gif 30 bucks for THAT? wow, did you ever undercharge- I mean I'm no pro so not a judge of pricing. (I made my first paid cake beginning of this month and charged 40 dollars for that godawful princess tiara cake in my photos icon_lol.gif but that was on a 2 dollar per serving basis lol). Anyway, I think your cake is amazing and you should have charged more. But that's just my unprofessional opinion lol

The cake may have cost $30 but the labor involved definitely made it worth more than that. I think you undercharged. Definitely, nothing less than $50.

it's a beautifull cake and different, I would have charge $40.00 to $45.00 because is a small size but I think the work is very original. I think $30.00 is cheap.

Beautiful cake. I would have charged $60. $30 was way too low. I charge that for a quarter sheet cake. Of course, I don't know where you live, so maybe that's a fair price in your area.

if i paid $30 for your cake, i'd think i got a bargain! lucky client!

personally, i feel like i'm not charging enough because i don't legally have a cake business. i'm only selling to my friends. but i'm still convincing myself to put more value into my work by charging fairly (be fair to myself mainly). but really, you make MUCH better cakes than i do of course icon_redface.gif

how about you? what affects your pricing confidence? thinking about what affects you personally may help you say out loud to others the amount you think your work is worth.

Your cake is beautiful! Here is some things to consider when pricing: How long does it take you to decorate a cake of the same size with balloons/flowers (traditional b'day cake)? How long did this one take? Bottom line....how many cakes (how much money) could you have made doing "traditional" cakes in the amount of time it took you to create this work of art cake? Maybe that helps a little light go off inside....it did mine! Again, beautiful cake!!

I cant believe the price $30 is about £15 in england. In england cakes must cost alot more because i would have charge £40 which is about $80.

Thank you all.

oceanspitfire - $40 for a cake that has both a tiarra and a pillow is way low, I think. BTW, I love your ghost and spider cupcakes. Great idea for grandkids' school parties.

Confectionary2 - I could never have charged by the amount of time it took - the better part of 2 days.

I don't actually sell cakes - just make giveaways. DD's trainer was training hard for a competition and craving chocolate around the holidays so when it was over dd took her a chocolate present cake. I guess that is how she asked dd to have me make a cake for $$. It actually felt good, though.

I am not nearly as good as any of you guys. Wish I had started this hobby sooner because I am such a slow learner. I am, however, having fun with it.

everything costs a lot in england! icon_biggrin.gif i would charge 40-50 if i made such a beautiful cake (which is actually still much lower than the high end conditoreis of course). that would be 27-34 pounds? i like the fact that they value handmade work a lot here in europe. labor too. i try to incorporate the line, "were you to pay me the corresponding amount for the actual number of my working hours on this cake, i'd become very rich indeed."

1st your cake is beautiful!!!! But my first thought when I saw it was---THAT CAKE IS OFF THE EDGE OF THE TABLE. I was very nervous for you!!!! lol

I'm thinking a little to cheap. I agree with everyone else!!

I'm learning that when you think your cake is priced too high, example $80. I say $78. People don't seem to freak as much. I learned this from someone here on CC.
