For my sister's baby shower in July, I am planning on having a drawing for a special prize for any guest who brings her a package of diapers.

Would it be tacky to have as the prize a gift certificate for a free cake?

I am working on getting my business off the ground. BUT I don't want to seem self-serving by making this the prize. Does this make sense?

Any thoughts on this?

Cathy

I think it's a great idea, but then again I am new at this also. You could do this in a number of different venues as well. Fantastic! thumbs_up.gif

I think it is a great idea. Everyone needs a cake for something and I don't think it is tacky at all. Most people don't have time to bake a cake and nothing is better than homemade. I say go for it I would be happy to win a cake.

I think that's a great idea!! It shouldn't matter to anyone what or where the prize comes from. It's a prize!!! Free!!

Have fun and good luck with your new business!!

I think using a gift cert for a cake is a great idea. Usually for party prizes the prize is something you don't need that comes from the dollar store. A cake is a great idea.

It is a greast idea. (i assume you're making the shower cake) Once they taste how good it is they will really be excited to win a free one.

Be careful. When I give a voucher as a prize I always put a value on it e.g 1 free cake to the value of £50 otherwise you may find they want a 10 tiered cake covered in hand made gumpaste flowers, trimmed with goodness knows what. possibly a bit of an exaggeration but they could request a very large time consuming cake. By putting a value on it they can have a fairly simple but nicely decorated cake free or if they do want the large time consuming cake they can pay the extra towards it

I think it's a terrific idea. I'd love to get such a door prize. Everyone needs a cake at some point. But, the idea of limiting the size/value is a valid one. People WILL take advantage if they get the chance....

Excellent Idea! I love it....and might just use the idea myself....(if you don't mind! LOL)
Not a bit tacky, and it will give your business a boost too. Everyone is a winner!

Yup i have to agree with MissB..... put a limit on it. Like, "you have won an 8" round cake"....

That would be a fantastic prize and much more valued.

I would only make 2-3 certificates make them work for it ; )

Thanks for all your feedback!

I think I am going to go ahead, but I will definitely put a limit on it, maybe $35.

Thanks again icon_biggrin.gif

What a great place to show your talent! And if you're making the cake for the event, it gives them a preview of what they would win. this usually gets people excited!
