If I am only stacking an 8 inch cake on top of a 10 in cake do I need to use dowel rods or can I just sit the cake board on the bottom cake?

If you don't use dowel rods, you take a chance on the upper cake's weight falling down into the bottom cake.

I vote for doweling also.

I would use dowels for any type of stacking task. Good luck. I've heard that some cc's use plastic straws. Someone has suggested the big, strong McDonalds straws. I always use wooden dowels. I've never tried straws, but I saw Geoff using straws on Ace of Cakes a few weeks back.

Starbucks and Panera Bread straws are good too. I've also heard great things about Bubble Tea straws and I picked some up at an Asian market today. I'd never heard of Bubble Tea before, but I'm brewing some now!
