I made some cookies this week using Penny's recipe (yum) and most of them did fairly well, but the round ones are no longer round! This is a problem because they were going to be sports balls. The other shapes (flower and star) seemed to spread evenly, but not the circles. Any suggestions/ideas?

Did you try chilling the dough? I know with Penny's it says that the dough doesn't have to be chilled but I've noticed that the 5-10 minutes in the freezer sure seem to help with spreading.... thumbs_up.gif

I also had a little spreading with her doough so I chilled it and they were great!

If they are Sugar Cookies I think they usually always need to be chilled for at least an hour.

Actually I believe 5-15 min would do the trick and they'll bake w/o spreading. Just a heads-up on that; might save you some time in the future icon_biggrin.gifthumbs_up.gif Although an hour certainly wouldn't harm the dough in any way thumbs_up.gif

I made Penny's cookies and did not chill at all. I had minimal spreading and my rounds were still rounds. Was your dough thick enough to pick up in your hands like a large ball? That would be the consistency I had.

you know I find that the thicker my cookie dough is the more it poofs and spreads.........now I'm starting to use the lollipop sticks as a guide for thickness......before I used dowel rods and they always spread a ton while baking......now I'm noticing I am not having as much of an issue now that I'm making them thinner.

Thanks all! I did chill the dough (by necessity, since my kids were trying to "help"). Maybe it needed a bit more flour because it was a bit difficult to pick up the extra bits when I cut it. I'll also try to make some thinner ones next time as a test.
