Ok, April 30th is my parents 25th wedding Anniversary. I'm going to try to make them a special cake. I've never done anything to this extreme as far as decorating. I've only taken the first course in cake decorating. I really feel I can do this though. Anyway I need any advice I can get. I have the cake picked out that I want to do. My sisters think I can do it, I hope they're right. Here is pic of the cake. On this cake how much fondant should I make for this size cake?

Here is a guide to tell you how much fondant to use for each size cake:

That cake was done by the fabulous CakesbyAllison. I have done a version of it (inferior, of course) in buttercream. In fondant, you would have to make some modifications. Since the top corners will be rounded, a top border wouldn't work very well. The top and sides kind of run together, so you'd have come come up with a stopping point for your scrolls that didn't look odd. Also, I find that the diamond impressions look very different on a fondant cake than a buttercream cake.

I don't mean to be negative, there are many beautiful modifications that can be made -- just be aware that in fondant, this cake will look very different!

Thank you, actually to be honest with you I thought it was done in fondant, I'm so nieve. It just looks so smooth to be buttercream that's all. I'll do some thinking on what you said. I love this cake, but I was really looking forward to working with fondant. Any suggestions for the edges? Maybe just leave them alone or would that look stupid with having the scrolls, dots and diamonds with no edging? How did they get that beautiful diamond pattern in buttercream? Anyway, thank you for bringing that to my attention, maybe I'll design my own. Since I love designing homes, maybe I'll enjoy designing cakes too!!! LOL
Thanks,
Melissa
P.S. Anything else I need to know would be greatly appreciated!!!! icon_biggrin.gif
