I have been decorating for about 3 years, and I have my first wedding cake due in May. I wanted to contact her caterer and see what kind of set up there will be for me and all of that, but I have no idea what I am supposed to ask for...any suggestions? I don't want to tell them that this is my first wedding cake, and I certanly don't want to tell the bride! Any tips would be wonderful. I am sorta freaking out about this cake, I just want it to be perfect. Thanks Donna
You could just call and ask how large the space for the cake will be. That way you know how much room you have to work with.
I usually never talk to the caterer and I have been in the wedding cake business for 12 yrs.
They usually deliver and set up the food. The venue or bride is usually responsible for your table.
TO answer your question... if the caterer is responsible then I would call and ask them what time they will have the table ready for you to deliver and set up the cake.

I do both ... cakes and catering. When I do both for a bride, this is never an issue.
When I do the cake only, I tell the bride what table(s) I need. If she has a punch fountain, I tell her the table needs to be near an outlet. I dont' call the site to ASK what they will have for me .... I TELL the bride what I require. Bottom line, I communicate all of this thru the bride because she is the one setting up her reception and communicating with the site and/or the on-site caterer.
When I do the catering only, please don't call me if you are the cake lady, because I dont' set up the tables and I don't coordinate what the other vendors need. This should be set up between you and the bride. The bride will coordinate it with her reception site.
Thanks for the tips ladies. I don't think I used the correct term for the person I was going to speak to...I guess she is the one who organizes the venue, but she is not her "wedding cordinator". Anyway, I think I have a better idea of what is expected of me. Donna
