How many of you go to the bakery to view the latest creations from the decorators. I can't pass by a bakery with out checking out the competion.
My kids even ask if they can go see the cakes. They come back with reports of balls of frosting instead of roses and shells that are at least 1/2 an inch from the edge of the cake...they basically decorate the board not the cake.javascript:emoticon('

Confused
I know it's not a nice but I just can't stay away.
Am I the only one?

When ever I can I look just to encourage myself because my cakes aren't very good. So when I see their cakes I think "Oh I could do that" (not like the cakes on CC
I can't even dream about making most of the cakes on here! But it is lots of fun looking
)
I'm just like you AuntEm! Looking at what everyone can do on CC is a little daunting because there is some awesome cakes out there. But when I go to the grocery store, I feel so much better because I know I can do 100% better than them.
The people at the bakery must know me as the "looker" because I'm in the grocery store a couple times a week and still go over just to look, even though they really don't do anything new.
I'm guilty to, and it's funny to me, now that when looking how you notice the little things on the bakery cakes that you wouldn't do on yours, and I'm standing there looking and thinking how tacky![]()
I do that whenever I can.... I want to see what new ideas are out there, not to worry about competition I am no competition for them, or them for me.....
Like you said: who can compete with the talent on CC?? Certainly not me! Therefore, I get a little boost of my ego by sliding by the bakery. Every once in a while, there will be something that catches my eye. I certainly don't buy them, that's for sure. I don't like that whipped cream frosting they do. Yuck!!
Its like comparing apples to oranges really, cakes I don't worry about, you're right on that, cake showing through the sides, shells that dont even connect, the local HyVee however does great pigure piping and decorating on their big sugar cookies, I take inspiration from those.
Gee, I guess I will have to do better huh? O well, I am picky about my cakes and the ones in the case are usually sent in frozen anymore and most of the time the only ones we get to do are special ordered.
But next time I see you ladies over there gawkin at my cakes (frozen or otherwise) I will wave and say "Howdy".
I don't just gawk at them.....I pick one up and take it home and eat it.....when im too lazy to make one just for eating!!!
thats right...Im not ashamed!!! I eat grocery store bakery cake! ![]()

LoL I go over and look because i want to see the mistakes. Frosting not smooth sometimes or just to see how simple the cakes are when before i thought it was sooo pretty. compared to most on CC those grocery store cakes are nothing.
I confess, I look too. But even worse than the cakes, I gawk at the donuts!!!! I love donuts but they don't like me. I always longingly stare for a few moments and then move on.
I'm not impressed with the decorating at most supermarkets, but I know that the folks who work there must meet a quota and I know that I couldn't keep up with the pace they are required to keep.
My hats off to those who do this. Remember, we all have to make a living the best we can and I'm sure that decorating in a bakery (any bakery, grocery store or otherwise) is a tough job.
Also, as I have said in the past, Costco cakes rock!! If I want a store bought cake or pie, my money is on them. They may be previously frozen, but I think they taste really good.
Cindy (just my 2 cents)

OMG I died laughing at the donuts!!!! They call out to me too!!! but not as much as the ice cream isle!!!
I agree with what you said...I always worry that some of us here on cc work in the bakeries and work on some of those cakes....
I'll eat cake whether its good or bad...I just wont eat it after a dog has licked it!!! ![]()
twins---That is so funny that you would mention a dog licking the cake. My best friend made a cake one time (she decorates too) and her Jack Russell got on the table and licked about half the icing off of her cake. It wasn't to sell, just a practice. She reiced it and took it to work and fed it to our coworkers!!!! I'm dying laughing as I type this!! You would just have to know our coworkers, they ate the whole thing!!!!

youre too funny cindy!!!
Thank you cake girl,
You know ladies I'd like to see you do something quite complicated, have perfect icing, etc. etc. if you are making thirty cakes, all due today. You know guys if I had the time that you all do to make those cakes perfect to have the time to do the viva method, or gumpaste or fondant or let my roses dry.
But, alas, I don't. As of this morning, I have 35 cakes due and most of them by noon and I go in to work at 7.
Ya'll try to make perfect cakes in that timeframe.
Am I upset? Nah, just letting you guys in on a little known secret and what us "grocery store" cake decorators have to accomplish. Especially on weekends.
chaplps,
I didn't mean to put anyone down> If I did, I appolize. I should choose my words more carefully.
I just was wondering if anyone else looks at cakes any time that they can find them. I'm miles away from perfect. Have only been decorating since last November.
I can't even imagine how quickly you must work to be able to get out that many orders. You must be like lighting fast.
I applaude your skills.
By the way your cake are beautiful. ![]()
mommachris
mammachris hun,
I wasn't mad. Sorry bout that was just freakin out alittle bit myself this morning. ARRRGGGHHHH!!!
We did get them all done today and after all was said and done it was more like 40.
Sheesh and I have this to look forward too for the next three weekends, Next weekend mothers day and college graduations, the week after that about 3 school graduations and the week after that the two local highschool graduations.
Last year we did...let's see here... I think it was 60 cakes on one weekend.
So I am gonna be a little on edge for a few weeks and then hopefully...woohoo... vacation..
And there is someone at work who wants me to make his wedding cake. O boy talk about lots of stuff to do.
What does make me mad though, and it isn't any of you ladies at all, by any means, it's the fact that they (walmart) is having us ship in more premade frozen cakes, You know you've seen em the yucky lookin buttercream with the nasty lookin borders and cabbages on crack roses
They have got to be the most butugliest cakes ever. And I feel bad that our decorating skills are judged by those gag-a-maggot things. What really gets me though is that the customers around here buy those cakes instead of the colorful ones we make. They look like blindfolded monkeys on crack made them. (can you tell I don't like em?)
My dream and goal is to one day open my own bakery. I feel that the experience of running a large bakery will someday come in handy when I have my own.
So don't feel bad guys. There are grocery store bakeries out there that don't really care how the cakes look just get em in the case and goodbye.
But we have made a reputation here on having good looking cakes.
We have a reputation of being able to draw just about anything on cakes. I am teaching my crew how to do FBCT's and doing master drawings for them to use when I can't be there. It's a real help.
So once again, I ain't mad atcha'll.
I was just doin some serious stressin.
Thanks for listening.
Tami.

I feel your pain on the predeco frozen blind crack monkey cakes. We get the same ones at superstore and i always feel ashamed that we sell them. The worst is when we get an order for something specific that i can do, but i have to call the customer and explain that the cakes come in predecorated.... i hate making those calls because customers get so disappointed that they cant get their order.
Sometime the cakes come in and the boarders are crooked, the icing is cracked and splotchy, and of course the "roses" look the worst. Apparently head office decided that they wanted to save money instead of paying someone to make quality cakes.
O Peach... you so know where I am coming from. It is embarrassing. And when you have customers who do want cakes decorated like that all you can do is turn around and roll your eyes. Sheesh.
But what I find that I love the most is when I get to play with the fbct's or the airbrush. I really love working with those.
And yes, to all you ladies out there who come to watch, we love it when we get to showcase our skills to ya all. I have told all my decorators to specialize in one particular style of cake. To make it their "signature" cake if you will.
I have one decorator who can do roses like no other. I do the artsy fartsy stuff. And we have a new one who is just learning her strong points but so far her speciality is cupcake cakes.
So, do come on by and take a gander. We like audiences. LOL
