I'm doing a cake for a little boy's first birthday. The invites have a pic of him on one side with a blue crown and the info on the other. Basically the invites are blue and brown (if I could ever figure out how to post a pic within the post, I would). Anyway, I'm doing a larger version of the blue and brown smash cake (in my pics). I'm putting a blue crown on top. I actually made the crown last night out of fondant, but I'm worried about it drying in time (I'm in Houston and the humidity is INSANE!). Should I make a back up? And if so, how would you do it? I've never used gumpaste or anything like that. I saw a thread about adding gumtex (??) to fondant. I'm willing to make another crown, just not sure how to go about it. Any tips or suggestions woudl be greatly appreciated!
Thanks to all! ![]()
When I want to get decorations really thin or strong, I add powdered gum paste mix to the fondant. I've never worked will gumpaste by itself, either... I added the gumpaste mix to the fondant just by kneading it in. Then I made roses...they came out pretty realistic looking. Hope that I helped a little bit... ![]()

I'm sorry thi off topic but I am trying to a prince theme for son's first bd i a few months as well but can not find anything prince for the life of me. Do you know where they got the invitations from?& can I see your cake when you are done for inspirations?
tia! =)
I did a prince theme for my son's 6th birthday. he was the prince and the boys were knights/dukes and the girls were princesses/duchesses. I simply made my invitations from a clip art. I found some really nice Little Prince clip art (might still have it saved somewhere) and the I wrote it like a scroll, tied it with a ribbon and hand delivered them. Either that or print them on linen paper and in linen envelopes and make a wax seal to make it look like a royal invitation... Homemade can be VERY elegant and far cheaper...

Wow, that sounds great.... if you do have the cliparts please send them to me ...but I will do a search of my own.
loveqm - I don't know where she got the invites. But, yes, I'll post my cake in my photos when I'm done. If I remember, I'll let you know here that I've posted it. Basically it will be a larger version of the Brown & Blue smash cake (in my pics) with a blue crown (with brown dots) on top.
Here is the image I used for the invites.

and I thought about using this one, but I thought it was toooo much Little prince and didn't look like a real prince:

loveqm (and anyone else who's interested) - I posted my cake in my photos if you want to look at it.
beautifully done! how long did it take for the crown to dry? which fondant did you use? I see everyone doing great things w/ fondant but I use MMF & it's too soft when I try things like that
loveqm - thanks! It took about 5 days for the crown to dry (and it's humid here). I just wrapped parchment paper around a large plastic cup and put it on there and left it to dry. I used Wilton fondant (I know, gross!). That's all I've used so far because I wanted to get comfortable with fondant before I tried making it myself. With Wilton, at least it's consistent and I don't have to worry about it.
