My niece has requested a puppy cake for her birthday. The problem is she want the dog to be yellow with brown spots, but she wants the frosting to be strawberry flavored. Has anyone ever heard of a strawberry flavoring to put in icing? Is this even possible???

Yes, there is strawberry flavoring. I'd try the candy making section. The only problem you might have is that it might be pink. Good luck!!!

McCormicks makes a strawberry extract.........I find it at my Super Wal-Mart.........it's clear too so it won't tint the icing......I think you have to be careful with the candy flavorings for icings though.....I think they're waaaaaaaayyyyyyy more concentrated than even extracts!

Thanks!! I'll have to check out Walmart this weekend. I read in another post that the flavorings seem to get stronger the longer they sit, so, I'm a little afraid. If I find some, I'll have to give it a trial run and see how it works out.

yep there's a strawberry extract by McCormick's..I used it this week for the brain cake I did. But the one I had is red in color so it tinted a light, light pink which was fine for me. But you could still add your colors to it, surely.

You can also use fresh strawberries in your buttercream which is delicious. For every 3 cups of buttercream, you want 1/2 cup of berries.

This should be done for best results when you are ready to use the icing (the berry taste is more pronounced.) Put the buttercream in the mixing bowl and add 1/2 of the berries to the bowl and mix on medium speed. The berries will break down and the frosting begins to turn pink. Add the rest of the berries a little at a time, adjust for color and taste, mixing until blended.

There will be a point where the buttercream will not take any more berries, then you are done.

For a layered cake, you can pipe the buttercream on the layer and push additional cut up berries into the icing. Really good and you get the taste of fresh strawberries as opposed to just an extract.

That sounds delish, and I'll have to try that sometime, but my niece has her heart set on a yellow puppy dog.

Oh, lol, sorry, I got carried away. Yes, it looks like an extract then. Do try the recipe sometime, it's like fresh strawberries and cream. It works with raspberries as well and if you do not like the seeds, just puree the berries and use a sieve, then add to the buttercream.

Best.
