I made a castle cake for a lady. She picked it up today and as she was putting it in her car, one of the side pillars came off. So I told her what to do to fix it when she got home.By the way, I didn't know she was going to drive it home 45 minutes away, otherwise I would've secured it better. She calls me back an hour later and says that during her car drive, ALL of the pillars came off and another piece that runs along the top border..I don't know what you call it. ![]()

Anyway she's been calling me all day and I"ve been guiding her through what to do to fix it but she's totally inconfident and she's on her way right now BRINGING IT BACK to my house for me to fix and then coming back early tomorrow A.M. to pick it up again. But before I start the repairs, I wanted to know if there's anything I should or shouldn't do. Sorry so long and TIA!
Ok, what if the same thing happens again after she leaves your house after you fix it ? It does not sound like a minor repair ! I know non of it is your fault, since these are circumstances beyond your control, but what if it requires a new cake ? would you have time to make another one ?
I would say , just do what you can w/out you having to make a new cake.
Then that way, you are not spending double of everything, your time and the cost of the cake. Because if if you have to, then you are on the loosing end. Just my thoughts. Good Luck ![]()
Does your schedule allow you to deliver the cake to her?? Under these extreme circumstances it might be nice for the customer to know you are going the extra mile (although 45 minutes is a long way). That is totally up to you and your schedule. If you deliver the cake, then you can make sure you drive slowly and avoid any minor bumps. I know when my husband drives my cakes, he forgets sometimes because he didn't spend the past ## hours creating the masterpiece. Just my opinion. Hope all goes well. Good luck!

This has never happened to me, but I tend to agree with cmmom's suggestion, if at all possible. This may avoid the exact same thing happening again if your customer leaves with the cake.
She just dropped the cake back off and all I can say is Oh my $*@%#*# gosh!! What the $#@%!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is bad . This is sooooo bad. This cake looks like some one ran over it with a mack truck! And I feel so bad for this lady. She was at my door crying her eyes out. She was so upset and shaking like if somebody died or something. I had to calm her down before I let her get back in her car! All I can ask for now is prayers people. It's going to take a whole lotta miracle to get this cake looking half way decent again and there's no time to make a new one. What I have here is an extreme case of Humpty Dumpty......
I can't post a picture right now . I don't have a digital camera, just a Kodak that uses some kind of wierdo film
and everytime I drop it off it has to get sent away to some special laband takes forever to come back. I won't be able to drive the cake either but I forgot to say that she's coming back with her Mom's SUV and her Mom too. I think the best way to go is with the doweling. I had them filled too with candy. Is that suitable or does it need to be beans. Also, there's alot of broken pieces of dried MMF EVERYWHERE. what do you think would be the best way to "glue" these pieces back together? And thank you everyone for your quick response.
I totally agree with the SquirrellyCakes last post. Customer service is very important! Even if we loose this time, we will gain 2 times more next time as the customer will be sure she will get a cake no matter what and WILL order again.
I would go to the customer and do all of the repairs on site to garantee nothing will happen to that cake again.
.... and yes, a picture would help us to help you
.
I keep my fingers crossed for you! ![]()
I finally finished putting Humpty back together and to my relief it looks DECENT!
Not perfect considering it looked like roadkill when I got it back but I'm happy with it. It took 4 hrs. to repair; 2 hours just to clean it up so I could start over again. Had to make another batch of MMF and thank goodness I kept the leftover BC. I'm more like a cumputer idiot rather than a wiz so when I figure out how to post pic's I will....of before and after. And thank you to everyone who came to my rescue and I hope there are no hard feelings among anyoneat Cake Central.
